Hello

i set my wifes local business on google places and verified it and was showing near the top but for some reason now we are like 10th and people above us arnt even in the area

so if we live in London, the people above us are in towns that are near London, so how are they ranking higher than us

Its hard to say but if you are just using the search engine itself to determine your rank, this is very unreliable. Google uses a lot of factors to deliver relevant results. For instance there is personalized search even if you aren't logged into a browser, there are location factors to take into account and then there are the queries you are using.

Try using some third party software to determine where the listing ranks (although I'm not sure if you can determine that for a listing as opposed to a domain).

Some things you could do to make sure you have your best foot forward are to fill out the places profile completely (i.e. fill in everything you possibly can). Use keywords that you are targeting in the listing.
