Google Places vs Local SEO

Is there a difference in the two for you? Are people still offering local seo or has it shifted to google places optimization and getting your clients into the 7 pack?

I offer both. I can often get pages to pass the maps listings in the organic search results, so why not have both on the first page?

May I ask what kind of approach you do when you get pages above the maps listing? Is this just based on backlinks, or are there any other things involved?

From your experience, can you tell if it is hard to outrank Google places listings? Do you have any specific link building techniques that help you with this task? Like more high PR backlinks? Etc

I second this question

i think google is gearing everything to its services and google + with places is gonna be big .. so do both for now but focus on places

It usually isn't too difficult for me. Using Magic Submitter and Scrapebox, one of my main techniques is:

15+ Web 2.0 Properties
- Each with a unique article on them (I use an ultra-spun article I did myself for the entire process)
- Using magic submitter, I update them once a week for 3-4 weeks
- Ping and Social Bookmark them
- Blast the shit out of them with scrapebox

Squidoo Backlinks
- You can actually find really high PR, relevant lenses to comment on. I only comment on do-follow pages (pm me and I can give you a few sample lenses to comment on)
- Then I ping/bookmark all of the Squidoo links

Video Marketing
- I make a slideshow or two per keyword and blast them to various sites using magic submitter
- For the hell of it, I blast the do-follow video links (such as DailyMotion) with scrapebox to improve the PR

Article Marketing
- I upload an article or two to about 10~20 article directories and blast them with scrapebox

If you have SeNuke X, a blast or two to your money site won't hurt either. All of that usually propels my sites to the top above the maps listings. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Might as well offer both. Why not? More money for you, more business for them.

From what I see, it seems to me that most organic listing also 'merged' with google places?
So in general, 1 domain can only take 1 spot on first page?

Can you please elaborate what you meant above? or if you can show some examples, that will be great.

What you can do to get around that is have the URL in the Google maps listing point to a "Services" or "About Us" page instead of the root URL. That way you can have both results up at the same time.

If you dont mind, can you please guide me to an example of this?
I rarely see sites that appears on both organic and places. I would like to investigate further myself.

I think lobozebra said it about as clear as he could. Inside the Google places listing for your web address you direct it to a page in the website such as your about page/contact page/services page..... That way you are free to rank the main domain page allowing them to reside on the same page.
