    Hi guys,
Posting in the lounge as it doesnt really fit into any category.

My site is the top results for about 90% of my keywords.
    However,
On a couple of them, the Google places results come up first.
Is there anyway to get above the Google places results?
For a couple of my keywords which im not on top for, other websites are coming up above it.
Is there any logic to getting above the Places results?

I had the same experience and after trying different keywords on my test I noticed that domains that have the geographical area name in can out rank GPlaces. Yes getting above it always best, the Gplaces listings structure can run down above the fold so bonus is above the fold.

My local listing has the same issue. I come up number one local but a competitor is always number one above local. They have more and better links. I jave just over 200, they are hard to tell. Google is mixing up their links with other links that have the same word in it. somewhere i found a site that had an 'authority' measurement. Mine was 19, theres was 30. out of 100. im not far behind and if they slow down seo building, i will catch up to then.

Like mrpickles said, its nuts how sometimes there will be real sites above the GP listings, sometimes there won't be.

I find it best to steer clear of those kinds of niches or keywords unless you are directly contacting people in that trade to advertise on your site.

In a word, no. I used to work as an in-house SEO for a large provider of data to Google and was monitoring 140 niches for such things. There was no pattern to whether or not the place pages would show at all, or whether they would be at the top of the pile or lower down. I believe that Google does multi-variate testing and tries various layouts. Most websites of the businesses were not SEO'd (didn't show signs) but where they were, there was a variation in the use of microformats, reviews, ratings, etc. IOW, for every example of a winning strategy, I was able to show examples where that strategy wasn't working for someone. Clearly, these were quick assessments, not deep-dives into each site.

So, the best you can do for ranking is apply all your local SEO knowledge to the main site, esp Google+ signals these days.
