No you simply enter the code into your places account page (for the place you are claiming) and it is job done.
It can take up to three weeks before the card arrives. Do not be impatient and request another as it generates another unique code and will invalidate the one already in the post to you.
Lots of accounts got canned in November and December as they were operating outside of g places terms of service. Whilst it is relatively easy to get another account the whole trust issue thing had to be rebuilt and this can take time. Those places entries that were ranking will not do so again until that trust has built up.
The purpose of the card is to prove to google that you really are at the address in the listing. Once you have entered the unique code the listing will unlock. If your places page will not show after that it is because you have down something spammy like put keywords in the business title. Edit it out and all should be fine.

is there a way to get around the postcard verification if you dont live or have an address in that city? I am trying to set up a couple places accounts in other cities and dont know how to get around this?
I thought about leasing a virtual office for 30 days but that doesnt seem to work as they all have 6 month minimum commitments?
any ideas?

You can purchase GeoDomains thorugh a cool new featuer that GoDaddy has called GeoDomainMap. The thought by many still is if you create enough directories with exactly the same address (one that is not an actual building) that google will scrap it off the internet. I have been working on this theory and while I have not had any actually populate on Gmaps automatically I still rank very high within normal search results for something like "service needed in your town".
You need to create 50 or more directories with the business info, pictures, description, and phone number. You will also need a unique website, not one that has the same content as your other sites. I suggest back linking to the more popular directories such as yelp, citysearch, yahoo local etc. Write some GREAT articles that target your geo keyword and back link that to your website and directory listing. This takes some time but worth the effort. One thing I have noticed is that most people doing this method half a$$ the directories and just add a name phone and address. My suggestion is that you add as much info as there are spaces
Also write REVIEWS!

I found a virtual office company that will do a one month minimum, I am waiting to hear back from them regarding the price. My contact was going to see if they could waive the set up fee and get it so the month only cost arond $100. This would allow me to use their address, get the post card, they would call me when it came and give me the code, then I could cancel the office and do it in the next city.
I will keep you posted on what I find out, the virtual office contact as well I will pass along.

I read a guide here on BHW I think. He had a great trick for gaming google places. It was based on the differences in how Google looks at addresses vs how the post office does. I wish I could remember the specifics but if you search here you can probably find it. Basically it had to do with adding an extra line to the address field with wrong info. Google only looks at the first line, but the post office will look at the last line. Ie you make the first line as where you want to be on the map and the second line your actual address and the post office will always get it right when it comes delivery time. Again this is not a clear explanation of the technique, you should really find it for yourself. I looked for a minute but couldnt find it. It may be worth your time though.

thanks, I will look around. My main problem is I am not in the state, so if I gave a real "first line" address and made up a "second line" suite number the fundamental problem is still there....how do I actually get my hands on the google postcard verification that will be mailed out to a completely different city and state to an address I just randomly picked.

Its pricey but look into mail forwarders. You can mail a bag of shit to someone in detroit who will remail it to another address if you like.

When you do any big major changes - for example changing telefonnumber, website etc. They will send another postcard. Except for that there is no other verification step, at least not in my cases (3 so far)
