Google Places pages have been entirely replaced by new Google+ Local pages. As of yesterday morning roughly 80 million Google Place pages worldwide have been automatically converted into 80 million Google+ Local pages, according to Google's Marissa Mayer.

its not dead, man...they converted all these pages, so its far from dead...

google is just forcing you to use google+...no surprise there..."google pus"....

It is dead. No more Google Places. So all those courses to help you rank in GP no longer apply. What sucks is that they are using Zagat as the indicator of "likes"... seems Google really wants to go after Facebook.

Is there any action listing owners need to take to convert to the places listing or is G doing this naturally.
No change in the UK listings as yet but those articles suggest it is being rolled out everywhere in the next few weeks!

We need a thread to discuss how best to adapt to this!!

Any US users got any pointers as yet?

No Google Places are not dead, it is updating after 23 April, if you have problem with any listing you go helpline or forum.

At the moment places listings are still appearing in the general SERP, I can't see that changing. The only difference is they have put a button on their local page to bring you tailored recommendation to what google thinks is your 20. In essence they are increasing local exposure not shutting it down.

This is just another adaptation for the mobile internet. With smartphones the query will be able to return a highly focuses local result as it will have you GPS co-ordinates as part of the query!!

what's ironic is that the night before, I posted a service for this and then the next day all the blogs were discussing how it's being converted.......
