Thank you for your studies and observations, its important to figure things out to know how to best proceed. Like many, a lot of my sites that are backlinked have tanked, even with link diversity, anchor text diversity. Could it be possible that the penalty for overoptimization is related to all the "standard" on-page tactices like keyword density, headers, bold, italic, underline, internal links, alt ... so for example, when every page is "properly" set up, the new algo can pick it up and assess overoptimization?
The only one obvious site of mine that didn't move at all was a site that was only lightly backlinked and had much more social interaction through FB, Twitter, G+, Stumbleupon & Pintrest. Is it possible that real social signals "diluted" the over-optimization of backlinks?
I don't think it really makes a lot of sense for google to penalize webmasters for following sage SEO processes, i.e. I'm not convinced that anyone has made a very compelling argument that google wants us NOT to optimize pages. However, the information in this thread about backlink profiles is valuable, i.e. link diversity, anchor text. Regarding on-page, I suspect that poor LSI may be causing some penalties.
However, your last statement about the social elements of things is where I believe the real problem lies for most people. That is to say that if REAL live people aren't sharing your information, or talking about your site on the social media sites, then you are likely to be penalized a lot irregardless of both on-page and off-page optimization practices.
Isn't that essentially what google said they would be looking for throughout this year, and moving forward? They want REAL people with REAL profiles really sharing your content and links on the sites where people do that, i.e. FB, Twitter, G+, Stumbleupon, Pinterest, and more. I suspect that if you can really get people motivated around your brand...the SEO stuff is currently way over-rated, but still necessary within reason.
If you think about it, it does make sense. In active communities the people trim out the scammers through natural selection, flagging, etc... It stands to reason that for google to evolve it has to learn to think like a person - which means observing a shit ton of people across thousands of social networking platforms. That's what I think is going on.
Just to clarify my thoughts on the social platforms, I'm really talking about dialogue, i.e. posting a facebook post, or a tweet isn't going to get it done anymore. Real people actually communicate, i.e. if your friend sends you to a justin beiber fanpage you fall in love with, you thank them with a post/tweet etc..., and then also share the information with your contacts. I really believe that legitimate social interactions are the next phase of SEO.
