Google Penguin's : how to fix?

Guys,

Like most of you I was also hit by Penguin!
For those that were hit ... what have you done/tried to do to beat it? and did it work?

So far all i have done is try reducing the number of KW's on my home page .... will update the results?

Please post your methods and did they work.

My site had dozens of #1 rankings & tanked up to several pages (random amount). I had way too many tags. Like 800 for 80 posts. Lots of tag pages with only 1 post, creating a lot of dup content. Site is built on wordpress. All tags were indexed and in my sitemap.xml. Worked for a long time for me. Til Penguin.

Went through my tag admin & deleted all that only had 1 post. Updated my sitemap.xml & resubmitted that in GWT.

Waited a few days then collected the 404 errors from GWT. Manually removed each of them from Google Index through GWT. 700 pages total. Yes it took a long time and I could've taken /tag/ out, but I want to keep that.

Slowly starting to see a recovery. I've deliberately not changed my linkbuilding so I can control for the tags. Other than the tags I have pretty good on page SEO - no dup titles, natural use of keywords (no stuffing), good navigation, etc.

I really wasn't hit hard at all, nor were most clients.

google penguin is when google got doggy fucked so bad they are walking like a penguin

what i don't get is only a third of my sites got affect the one that's pure quality no spam shite sites

-Clean up on-page spam you know you've done
-Clean up bad you know you're been involved with, as best you can
-Wait for news of a future Penguin Update and see if you recover after it happens
-If it doesn't, try further cleaning or consider starting over with a fresh site

You will want to remove all the 'keyworded' anchor texts from all your backlinks and make them seem a lot more natural type backlinks. Such as: "Click here" "Go to", http://www., www, etc

You will also want to add some authority links into pages that are getting you backlinks.

If you are using 2.0's for backlinks, make sure their themes are not default ones, make sure they have plenty of images in their posts, etc.

After google penguin update every body is trying some sort of method.Did any body figure what really works to rank in google after penguin?

I've helped quite a few websites recover from Penguin, here's what we've done.

1. Reduce onsite variables

Often times the clients content sounded like it was written for a robot (which it was!), keyword densities of 15%, every H tag perfectly optimized and only anchor text links internally. The first step is making the website more user friendly by reducing the keyword density to less than 5% on each page. Next step is removing the excess H tags and bolds, strongs, etc. Reducing it to one usage is fine.

2. Above the fold

Most people are completely overlooking this and many clients I've consulted with that were hit the hardest were those sites that had large advertisements, call to actions, lead gens, or images that were sitewide. By reducing the sitewide above the fold areas, and bringing the content up to the top, many clients began to see immediate recovery.

3. Off site cleanup

Most clients weren't subtle about their linkbuilding efforts. We've all made this mistake at some point in our SEO career. Building only perfectly optimized anchor text links and have zero anchor text diversity. Now, you need to build in a layer of diversity like never before. If you have over optimized your anchor texts, it's time to try and change out those legacy links and/or begin a "unoptimized" link building campaign. This means linking with anchor texts like "click here", find out more info, etc. Also naked URL links are key. Also don't forget to link the rest of your website as well. Not only the homepage.
