Google Penalty vs Deindexing

Hi all, I got into the IM scene after Panda and Penguin had been released so I've always been careful with my backlinking. Over the past year I've had 16 sites, and only one disappeared from Google never to return. Basically what I'm asking is, is getting a ranking penalty far more common than getting removed from the search results?

If you start building quality backlinks to the penalized site and re-submit to google, you may get re-indexed slowly. But re-indexing is possible.
 
You get deindexed for on page issues, mainly. If Google sees your actual site as complete spam, they'll deindex you. However, websites with reasonable, nonautogenerated content not meant for link manipulation will almost never get deindexed, just penalized.

If you head into the cloaking arena, it's a whole different story.

Thanks for info. My site got Penalized for "un-natural linking patterns", I wonder how many links I will have to place in order to "normalize linking"?
 
Fix, If you got a manual penalty, you can't override it I just building good links. You have to get rid of as many links as you can, disavow the remaining bad ones, and apply for reconsideration.
 
Thanks for advice Runatic, I guess I will be sending out those "annoying emails" asking for link removal ;) Can you recommend a good program to find those links or sites?
 
Personally I don't use any automated programs but then I deal with mostly whitehat sites that over did it a bit. If you've got a pile of Blackhat links it may be hard to get the penalty removed. I've heard that remov'em is good but haven't used them.

It's a Google tool to remove bad backlinks. Some people like the tool while others don't think it works. I personally have never bothered removing bad backlinks. If one of my sites isn't ranking well after months or is deindexed I give up and move on.
 
Getting a ranking penalty happens all the time nowadays. That's the only way to push the limits of what your site can handle. And once you've found that threshold, you simply dial it down a notch for your next batch of sites.

How can you tell what is a ranking penalty and what is the Google dance? I had one keyword drop 280 ranks today, while another is holding steady at #9 on the same site. I don't get it.
 
I have 6 sites that used to be ranked top 3 for several months. Now, they're toward the bottom of page 1 no matter how much SEO I perform. Does this sound like a penalty? Can penalties be so light that you stay on the first page?
 
The google dance is when your site starts bouncing around from lets say page 4, to page 9, then to page 5. This dance happens rather frequently.

A penalty is when you are moving up in the rankings and then you shot back to lets say page 7 and then you stick there for a long time with no movement whatsoever.

They both seem to work in a similar manner, so the best thing to keep from going crazy from checking rankings on a daily basis is to keep yourself busy with other sites.

I typically check my rankings once a week, if that.

What I don't understand is how I used to hold #1 rankings with some sites with ease. Now I'm having trouble keeping them in the top 10.
Edit: Even stranger is that these same sites are destroying Bing. 16/44 in top 5 and 7/44 at number 1.

Bing is more stable as compared to Google...with bing once u get top ranking usually it stays ...and bing is more tolerant of mass links
