With one site I worked on I took out 90% of pages and left 10% of real dense content. It worked.
I had a look at this new update and apparently Google really likes 20 feet long down scrolling pages......sigh.

From what I can see Google wants 1000+ word articles now with plenty of photos.
So if you have a bunch of 200 word articles, coalesce them into fewer longer articles.
I have video site with titles and small descriptions...

Ah, I did something similar back in May when I deleted the poorly-ranking articles on my business site (most of those were short, 200-400 word articles). Two weeks after I removed the articles, Google finally deindexed all of the pages I removed, and on the same day the clicks, sessions, and average ranking position went up for that site.

Exactly like my experience.
When you're able to convince Google that you've removed the dangling empty pages (e.g. get then unindexed) the results are lightning fast.

look in your backlinks what backlinks were penalized and disavow them from your profile
