Google Page Speed Test. Take it seriously?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering what people think of Google speed test. Do you take it seriously? My site is getting 40 mobile and 60 desktop. The main recomendations are browser caching, compression, minifying and server response time. I already pay attention to image compression as that seems a bit of a no-brainer.

Second question, does anyone have any experience making improvements to the above. I can see a separate thread someone struggling with eliminating render-blocking CSS...

Yes. It is a very important aspect of On-Page SEO and Google will definitely recognize that when ranking your website. I suggest optimising your site not just for google, but also for user experience as this will increase sales. There are many guides here on BHW.

They did write that page speed is a factor now.

I think the simplest things that you can and should do:
1) Move your JS scripts to below the closing of the body tag, this will help
2) Use htaccess to enable gzip compression, google it, you'll find a result (I can't paste links yet)
3) Compress your JS and CSS files using any online minifier

Those 3 tricks alone can help dramatically improve your page speed.

Google aside... every time I make the ecom store faster conversions improve and sales go up. That by itself is reason enough to keep things fast.

Speed is a ranking factor, but useless without backlinks.
Unless your site is terribly slow you will be ok without paying much attention to it.
Even google.com gets a 79 speed score on its own tool.

All other things being equal, speed will get you higher. But in the overall formula, it's probably a 10% factor at most. If the site is very very slow, it does penalize you, but if the site is very very fast the advantage is not as great as it's made out to be.

Yes speed is one of the essential factors for rankings.IMO,it is important not only for Google but also for user who visit your website which can helps you to gain more rankings.
