To add to that, i would caution against expecting even 1/2 of that traffic when you hit #1...most estimates are fairly exaggerated...especially adwords traffic tool.

You have had experience of reaching the first page and the estimated traffic was 1/2 of what Google reported.

By this I take it you mean googles adword keyword tool
If so is this the number of local or global search figures results also you need to look at where google gets these figures from (the entire google network not just google search)

I agree. this are the positions worth to work for, page #2 is not an option

It's really going to depend on the keyword and whether or not your site can offer something that the 10 on page 1 can't. If your keyword is "Best buy" - good luck because 999/1000 searchers are going to click on bestbuy.com. if your keyword is "big red gum" and the first 10 pages are about bubble gum and yours is about gingivitis, you might soak some traffic.
