Google: One Million Sites Using Rel=Sponsored

An interesting tidbit from the podcast from the Google folks was that Gary Illyes from Google said a heck of a lot of sites are already using the rel=sponsored link attribute. He said one million sites are already using the rel=sponsored link attribute.

1m sites seem like a lot to me. Most people don't even know about this. Even 1m pages are a lot for this considering the attribute has no real functionality.

A lot? There are more than 2 billions websites online... 1 million is like 1 out of every 2,000 webmasters.
To me it seems like nothing, not a lot

Yes. 1 out of every 2,000 webmasters using "rel=sponsored" is definitely a lot. I bet 1 out of every 2,000 webmasters doesn't even know about this. Even if they know, there is no good reason for them to use it unless it's embedded in their CMS.

They all are trying to soread it like butter everywhere so people can get more and more into Google trap!

Its better to get nofollow link than getting this sponsored tags with link!

Google is surely gonna misuse this one day soon!

And as we saw recent tweets from Google they have been trying to stop guest post at all they are obviously planning a big trap.

With the "rel=sponsored" we're essentially providing data on which the Google's ML algorithm can train on to distinguish guest articles from regular ones.

I'd really like to see a case study when someone gets only backlinks marked as sponsored.

With a twisted Google logic, it can help for some time, so people will use it, then it will slap all the pages in an update one or two years from now.

I think they use this tag sponsored to search for intruders.
