Can anyone tell me why despite having a description meta tag google keeps showing a snippet from my page often unrelated stuff? This seems to mainly happen with wordpress despite setting a description tag.

    any help would be appreciated,
    thanks.

Are you searching for a different keyword than you have in your meta description? Sometimes google will replace your meta description if there is another keyword that is searched for that is not in your meta, but is somewhere on your site.

Check your WP settings, and All in one settings (SEO plugin if you have one)
or maybe or description have more then 170 words.

If those are ok just wait couple days..

Google will choose the best description for a site regardless of the meta tag. Usually it's the meta tag but not always.

Have you checked the meta tag with a meta tag analyzer. Check it with some meta tag analyzer with Googlebot as the settings. Normally descriptions are auto generated if there are no meta tags available but it can also be due to keyword you are searching. Google always provides the best description for that keyword relevant to your website.
