    Hello,

The map located in Google Search results really helps with Local SEO but does anyone know how it actually works with ranking a site?

I just finished a site and for some reason it is already top one (A among A-E) within the map despite having many other local competitors. The thing is, Not much SEO work done on that site and the site is the newest one among all the sites in the map list.

In contrast to that, I have another site that was ranking top one (within the map) for over a year and was shot down to number two just recently.

I'm starting to think that maybe the search results are more location based on your server IP, meaning the closer you are to business, the higher the site will rank in the map but that doesn't really sound right at all.

Again, what actually influences the rankings in the map? Any good opinions?

    Thank you!

Search results are more location based! Try searching again using a VPN (different IP address) to see if the rankings change!

You can go into search tools and set your location to the country, then perform the search of city + location to get an idea.

Have you checked the social side of the no1 website?

This could be having an impact, if a lot of local people are interacting.

Without having a detailed look I couldn't tell you for sure.

    Thanks for the replies!

I have to add that this strange occurrence only applies when searching a keyword with the name of the city, which normally brings about the map rank results.

Therefore, I have suspicion to believe that part of the search factors are location based because when searching from a different city, the rankings on the page are a bit different...

In addition, the social side is not active with the number one site. I have youtube, twitter, fb, and g+ and still not doing better than the number one site.
