Google Keywords Tool - Not Accurate ?

I believe that google keywords tool is not accurate:
- I rank first for certain keyword on google, it gets 300K search monthly and I only get 75K visits monthly from google. That is around 25%
- I rank 4th for cetain keyword on google, it gets 22K search monthly and I only get 600 visits monthly from google.

What do you think? I check the traffic at awstats.

Actually that's not bad. My biggest surprise was when I hit the top 10 for a keyword that supposedly gets 300k searches, and I am getting about 10 visitors per day Wildely inaccurate.

I read somewhere an article about how to solve this issue. You should have a ranking site in google. Then go to google trends, type in your keyword that you already rank for, than compare it with the keyword you want to predict searches. It should give you an idea of what you can expect. It is still inaccurate but better than going only with the keyword tool.

GIGO - garbage in = garbage out. Did you research on exact phrase or use broad or phrase results? Did you look at local searches instead of global? Do you have a good relevant title link for the kw phrase? A good meta description relevant to what a search user is looking for? Does your url for this top ranking kw look irrelevant?

My guess is your title, description or url isn't enticing to get clicks OR you did your research incorrectly and looking at imaginary traffic numbers. 4th spot on page one with a very relevant title, description and url can expect 6% of the qualified traffic. You say 22k monthly search - first I doubt that is local searches, even if it is that equals 1320 clicks if your link looks relevant. You're getting 600 but what is bounce or time on site numbers telling you? If very short time on site or high bounce then you know you're not offering what searchers are looking for. Dumb searchers are finding you but savvy ones are avoiding the click because they spot something irrelevant in what you're showing them.

Lastly, consider two things.

Google numbers INCLUDE all our research tools blasting them with kw research. What percentage of local search numbers do you think receive NO CLICKS? Because they are people researching to find competition numbers and such. So all those research queries are on the Google roll but don't count for anything.

Secondly, searchers are getting smarter everyday. They now look at the title, description and url before clicking to try and determine what is most relevant. They aren't as dumb as they used to be and just clicked the first link and then second and then third. They've refinded their own methods to weed out what they don't want to see. Even if you have a great title and description but your url has irrelevant kws in it then you're gonna get passed over.

Getting to page one and getting clicks are two totally different things. To imagine anyone getting and staying at #1 for a kw phrase getting 300K local monthly searches on exact phrasing without an SEO team of developers is remarkable and almost unbelievable. If this is a commodity kw you'd have eBay and Amazon all over that and with their millions of backlinks they could easily dominate it. Very few of these high search kws are slipping by the big boys in SEO marketing. I suspect if you do more research you'll find the answers you're looking for. I think you're looking at wrong numbers to start with.

That said, Google kw tool is just a jumping off place. There is no way you can use that tool alone to factor in all the variables necessary to determine a good KW phrase to market. I only use it in high competition areas to generate kw suggestions to research with better qualified tools that give a much larger picture of kw value.

2 things.. Google does skew the numbers; the only way to know for sure is to do a ppc campaing to see the true numbers. Also, you have to "sell the click" with your combination of title tags and description tags.

I agree with you, Google not provide always good result that why I use only paid tools.
