Google Keyword Tool ever wrong?

hey

I have a couple of sites (not niches sites but eCommerce and another which is non-money making) and I was doing a bit of keyword research for my non money making one when I come across a keyword which is low in competition and has over 200,000 local exact searches per month. Can this be right? Could Google be this far out with this keyword?

By the way the word isn't a word out of the dictionary and if I was to rank for this word it is totally relevant to my site (hence why I searched for it).

The 'competition' status in Google's keyword research tool doesn't relate to SEO competition, but advertising competition.

So a keyword could be listing as having 'low' competition in the keywords tool, but is actually very hard to rank.

I understand that. I mean when searching in Google for that word, #1 has a decent page rank and loads of back links etc. but the rest in top 10 are a couple of Facebook pages and eBay items.

I believe the Adwords tool data is wrong sometimes, because I have searched for several keywords in which I know there is tens of thousands of searches a month, and very low competition but there is no result shown.

As a test I optimized a website for that keyword and it went straight to number one result in search in a week. It now makes 30% of that website traffic from google, which is around 700 unique a day just from that keyword.

Remember thats from a keyword adwords gave me no result whatsoever....

the answer to your question is no, there is a margin of error but it won't be large
if it's a band/copyright that might be a reason for the low competition. of course we can't judge the keyword, only you can judge the keyword
