Hangout got hanged long back. Funnily, I still see it in my gmail, and I have no idea why they would have it there.
But anyway, even if it was active, it wouldn’t make sense for such a case. IRC would have been a better choice if they had to go with old tech.

They integrated it with Google Chat
Which is still a thing more or less for Google business users.
Kind of impressed that it never died considerating how many "chat"/"video" apps google put out in the past two decades

Last time I used Discord was for Wow raiding. Just logged on and my DMs are full of crypto/NFT spam

Which was eventually integrated and transferred into Google Meet which prior recently also absorbed Google Duo.

Hangouts is dead since like 2020.
Every company these days happens to have a discord community apparently, so google decided to join the gang and now you have that abomination for bard.
Sucks imo. Should've used google groups.

It's because discord is more popular than any available platform in the market and almost everyone is using it from all the fields. It looks like a cheap marketing tactic for their new AI bot as they are promoting it with the help of discord. They might also be giving the impressing that it can be integrated in the chatbot of discord.
