This website has been operating for nearly 6 years and has acquired the best links in its domain.

However, even with this advantage, they were not able to avoid being penalized by Google.

It seems that all the efforts we put into our domains are merely a game of chance.

What do you think could be the reason for the website's penalty from Google?

Seems like your tool serves outdated info. Ahrefs shows that they have at least partially recovered and get more than one million visitors a month.
+ most of its kws are *. near me. I would say that this site is gambling and not Google.

Would you mind sharing the screenshot of the traffic?

Content has to be quality. Individual pages and website as a whole.

Well researched, full of useful facts, complete information, references to sources, author recognizes as expert on the topic. Overall the website should not dilute content much. It hurts credibility.

I guess it depends on the niche. I agree with content dilution (like over-optimization and content just too long), but on my niche I see a shift towards news sites (both international and local). Only after that will come strong niche authority pages/sites and the rest is just garbage. Low-middle authority pages/sites were obliterated. From a user's perspective (like mine, for example), I would put the strong niche sites in front, and then a mix of news sites and middle-low authority niche. However, seems like google is pushing for more ad spending. For me, the signs are pretty clear.

What I am seeing here is that this website has tons of backlinks from weird subdomains along with high quality links. But the weird links are many more particularly to the homepage. I can clearly see that those links are not very high quality as you would expect. Rather they look spammy.

That might be the reason why it got hit. I have seen similar cases recently with websites that don't have high quality homepage links from reputable sources. They all got hit.

This right here, I got hammered on a small site I started after like 1 month during this recent update. It wasn't even a crazy amount of content. It was like 5-10 day

Yes, what query calls for is important. (search intent)

If News articles is what search engines want to see on top, then that type of content should be published.
