I read somewhere that submitting to an article site rather than directly submitting to Google is a better way to get your page indexed. Is this true? Also, does this apply to other search engines?

It's true. Submitting to Google confers no value beyond letting them know you exist. External links improve how they rank you.

This applies to the big 3 search engines.

Why bother trying to get google indexed your site, while you can draw their bot attention right to your site through posting in article websites?it's helpful and brings in more visitors while forced google bot to notice it,start writing article and let them noticed you.

May be you are true, but in my opinion article directories are not very effective as they used to be. After Panda update many article directories are affected and losing ther importance.
