Google index question?

Hey all,

A quick question regarding how google indexes sites. If I understand correctly by searching your domain name in google, your site will come up in the results if it is indexed? Am I right so far?

I created a wordpress blog last week, have been creating backlinks, etc, and when I search for 'www.mydomain.com' in google, only my about page shows up (http://www.mydomain.com/about). Does this mean that the whole site has been indexed?! Why doesn't just my domain name appear?

Webmaster tools tells me 'Pages from your site are included in Google's index.'

Any help or clarification would be much appreciated!

To check which pages on a site are indexed, use the site: command So, go to google, and as a search query use "site:mydomain.com" (without quotes)

Is it normal for google to index only part of a site? In my case my wordpress blog has 4 posts currently, and when I do the search 'site:mydomain.com' my 'About' page shows up, and a link to the first post (http://www.mydomain.com/myfirstpost), but not the root directory (just the domain) or links to the other post.

Yeah, it is common. Make sure you have a sitemap up and submit that to Google, so when something's updated, Google will be notified. Also, be sure to ping the pages that you want indexed. For a quick listing, consider submitting your page(s) to Digg.

Means nothing - GSC can take time to update data. And with my site I see all 3 cases below:
1) Page shows up in "site:" and in GSC
2) Page shows up in "site:" but not in GSC
3) Page doesn't show up in "site:" but shows up in GSC

GSC usually takes 2 weeks for my site to show a site that is indexed ("site:"). If you created a link, wait 2 weeks and see if it shows up in GSC - that link should count for sure. Rest of the cases, I am not sure. Still experimenting.
