How do i get images to the top of the images page for a keyword? Is it a case of building links to the image url?

In addition to the filename and the alt tag, the surrounding content, the domain name and the general theme of your site also matter.

If you want to rank for a specific keyword, surround the image with some content with the targeted keyword.

I'm not 100% on the effects of backlinks for image search, I would assume they help, but don't know how much... Anyone have any knowledge on this?

If you have your photos on a separate url, then make some onsite seo and then use every knowledge you have to do offsite seo.

Yeah, think of it logically. I don't know an awful lot about vertical search but have noticed some of my images ranking for their respective KW's and it seems to work with the whole package - KW TLD, KW on page etc
