Okay, I used to go there for niche ideas.
Then Google recently reduced it down from The Top 100 Hot Trends down to 40 results only.

It's currently down to just 20 Results! WTF?

Now I think that's just a damn shame, as there were some gems there on a daily basis.

Since, I rarely watch TV news (I spend so much damn time on the computer)
I used to check it for the news. I am sure this is in direct response to combat
the websites made for Adsense only.

If they cut it down any smaller it will be 10 or maybe
ONE HOT TREND
Oh well, it aint the first time the big "G" cutt off their nose despite their face
(Adwords has been getting shitty and shittier on a constant basis)

That being said I think Yahoo! lies about their top 10 and I always felt Google's was accurate.

Who knows....

Peace,
O

Wrong forum! :p
But yeah, I think Google is getting ready to implement a paid subscription based hot trends page or something like that. Google seems to be getting greedy recently... Although I may be wrong though... Just my thoughts, because why else would they limit this data?

Yeah, this is exactly the kind of thing I've been experiencing. It was first 100, then they cut it to 40 and now 20, wtf? Can barely make bank on it anymore, definitely not like I used to 3 months back anyway. Ah well, time to jump on a different boat. I just wonder where Google sees itself going, considering their advertising solutions are quoted as 98% of their total revenue, and they've shut out tonnes of affiliates by tightening rulings :O.

The internet was finally hit by the recession, following up on the whole paid subscription thing... Hulu and Google have been cutting back and figuring out ways to capitalize on their once free services. =\ Shame.

I noticed this the other day and was WTF too. Makes all Google Trend methods pretty much useless. Google also discontinued their sponsored links page. :(

Well, there's always Yahoo Buzz, Ebay Pulse, Amazon's best sellers, e-books.com, et al. Recession, Shmecession, Big G has a business plan track record that goes "get'em hooked, then make'em pay" that is consistent with their reduction of Hot Trends items. They give a lot, then progressively take away. In this as in other areas, use a variety of good sites to track profitable trends, don't be entirely dependent on Google.

The change was done in accordance with the roll out of their "Hot Topics" function.

G Trends is still good for identifying hot searches that are going on. G Hot Topics is also good for this since you can see how active a topic is in real-time.

Google seems to be getting greedy recently...

Pffffttttt... recently? Google is Google BECAUSE they are greedy. Dude,
they're linked up with NASA, we're talking defense contracting here.
Who knows how much Google is worth...

Can't wait for white un-manned drones with 'Google' on the side patrolling
L.A. and firing on 'insurgents' with hellfire missiles.

Google doesn't give a fuck about anybody except for Google

Shutting down affiliates is actually a smart move by them. With all of their data that they have collected over the years from Adwords, Analytics, etc... they can now run these campaigns on their own and make tons more than they used to charge for PPC. It is total domination for every niche, every affiliate product in existence.

We as affiliates have run the required tests for them, now it's up to them to use that data and make money.

It's a dick move, but a smart one.

Not only that, but several ex-NASA scientist and engineers actually work for Google on a full time basis. Almost everyone near the top of the ladder at Google is unbelievably smart. That's something to think about for anyone who thinks they can outsmart Google on a long term basis.

As far the direction Google is going, it's pretty simple. Their goal is to get as many of their ads and services in front of people as they can. It doesn't matter if affiliates put them there or not, just as long as they're there. Take a look at the nice system they'll have going on soon:

Google operating system-->Pre-installed Google Chrome (and other services)-->Pre-installed Google homepage-->People click on ads

That's not me being some conspiracy theorist, just smart business on Google's part.

Excellent point, and scary too. Remember when Jackson died? I threw
up a couple Adwords camps. to (celebrate) profit from Jacko's death.
They never ran... ever. And they weren't rejected either.

My theory is google pounced on the 'tragedy' and made a killing...
just a theory....

If weren't seeing your ads and your campaign was running, they were probably showing on pages that no one was seeing.

There was such a huge influx of advertisers going after Adwords when MJ died that the prices were insane for most keywords. Not to mention you had to beat out countless others.

I find it funny that people are talking about Google conspiracy theories and stuff like that. Google is the biggest SE, there's no doubt. And yes they change their rules a lot and do a lot of things that are irritating to say the least, But you have 2 choices:

1. Run away scared, complain, give up.

2. Accept it and use them to make money.

guys that doesnt mean anything. yea it sucks but so what. Be ahead of the game. Twitter is almost always the fastest source of trending news. After that you can almost guess what the hot trend will be. You may get lucky and reg a keyword domain that will be hot for ages. I know i did. All luck haha.

I wouldn't recommend registering a keyword from G Trends unless it is something that you know will have somewhat of a long term value. You'd be much better off using Web 2.0 sites since Google is all over these sites anyways.

Using a new domain takes time, so the trend could be gone by the time Google indexes your site.

google insights offers some pretty good insights into the demographics behind trending topics. its a useful complement to the Hot Trend tool

I agree, now its 20 rather than 100 it means less opportunity/more people going for the same thing.

Yahoo Buzz is quite OK as well, I personally like this one too:

http://www.whatthetrend.com/

Tells you what is most 'tweeted' about with an explanation. Gives a basic idea of what's going on in the world, what people are moved by :amish:
