Google announced recently that the social network has just surpassed the 100 million monthly users mark. The new number is significant, not least because it shows that Google+ is far from being the ghost town many are suggesting it is. 100 million people is a lot of people and the time it took for Google+ to get there is relativity fast. How much does it got to do with the fact that Google gives it a big weight and importance in sites page ranks.

That might be the case, but I think people got into the G+ since most have gmail accounts and google just automatically get you into it, and also the hype that went around it when people were frustrated with facebook frequent changes. I don't see myself getting into G+ but since it's good for ranking my site, I have to be there.

Many webmasters including me has dozen G+ accounts just for improving a site's SEO. If they are referring to all registered accounts, I'm not sure how many users are really active there at this moment.

Google plus is good is using the rel="Author"/"Me" function on website profiles an the Contributor to function, helps with Whitehat Link building that is essentially extended PR. There, you can move on to link building tiers.
I will say, niches do seem to be healthy in G+ and isn't exploited enough. But 100M isn't remotely representative of the active users, many accounts are completely passive/innocuous.

i would agree 100% ... hope they will show us the number of inactive or bot accounts... but you know that wont happen.

I actually like Google for personal use. Much prefer it to FB, actually. HOWEVER . . . as it stands, I really think it appeals more to users who are more tech-savvy than the average FB user. That being said, I can see Google making it a lot more user-friendly in the near future, while keeping the techie bells and whistles that appeal to geeks like me.

I was reading somewhere some time ago a toplist of sites traffic.
#1 Microsoft 1.1 billion monthly users
#2 Google 900+ million monthly users
#3 Facebook 800 million monthly users
No wonder G+ is growing fast. I am simply too busy with other work to try G+ out thus I don't feel too convenient about giving personal information to google.
Think about things for a moment, your phone calls are being recorded, when you use bonus cards at store, they record what you eat/buy, you use gmail, your phone calls are being recorded, your internet activity is being recorded by our ISP
Now with G+ you give them your friends and interests. Think about that. We're pretty much under a total control already. Who want to celebrate this considering the facts I gave?

If you read the article I posted, they claim that Google+ users average 3 minutes a day (It's a few months back, so the figure is at 90m users).
I think it's a UX thing more than anything for duplicate accounts. I know I have personally accidentally created multiple G+ accounts when creating a new emaill (or adding a domain email to gmail etc) and was unaware of it until I googled myself. For a company that focuses so much on product design, especially considering how excellent Google Docs is, this seemed to be a major oversight with new email creation automatically making a new G+ account:
Sure, it increases the 'number' of users and looks pretty on a press release but it goes against Google's end game of creating a sustainable Social Network that isn't perceived as a ghost town or overrun with GIFs.
