only if they catch you. But then again, they will penalize you if they catch you with any backlinking scheme, not just with interlinked scheme, so...

Even so, it this day and age, you will still find people claiming they will rank your website with a linkwheel of free links... This post refers to exactly this, I presume, having a bunch of sites interlinking for added value.

Nothing new is it? After a while if you over do the interlinking all sites go down, even if you have different IPs, at the end your affiliate links will mostly be related,

Maybe he is just f**ing our brains as usual with his vague comments

They'll give a penalty if you share links between 2 sites. For example, I give you a link and you give me one, then we both get penalties. This has been there since a long time, but they might've developed a more efficient system to identify them. Otherwise, it's just Google brainwashing their whitehat cult.

nothing new for real,
it's been the case for years and while could cause problems to bh built links, I would say that it would never be one for genuine websites,
they simply have no way around this, many websites exchange links naturally, it's just part of the content

To be honest, there’s so much data, websites and variables out there that penalizing on fixed rules would result in a lot of false positives. For example, websites belonging to the same company and all linking each other not necessarily for SEO but to let people know those sites are related/share ownership. Not to mention negative SEO of course.

I think google should stop penalizing sites altogether. If google thinks a link is abusing its guidelines, it should just ignore it.

Like oh this site suddenly has 10k spammy backlinks? Just ignore them instead of penalizing and de-indexing the site.

If google thinks a site is a farm (aka a pbn), then just ignore the obls instead of de-indexing the pbn and penalizing the sites linked.

The comments after the story are hilarious.

"Link Schemes" are hard to detect if done well.

It is perfectly natural for Site A to write an article about Site B and link to Site B in the article. It is also perfectly natural for Site B to publish a post saying "Hey! Site A wrote an article about us. Check it out here <link>"

Google is an algorithm 90% of the time. Barring human reviews, it is very difficult to write a program to detect "schemes" without unfairly punishing legit sites that show the same perfectly natural and prefectly reasonable link pattern.

Yes, google continues to get smarter and continues to try and dismantle "black hat seo" but they are not magicians or psychics. They still need their algorithm to work for the majority of sites that are not trying to deliberately game the system.

Google thrives on propaganda and disinformation.
