Google Has Manually Penalized Mozilla Firefox

It's true, I came to find out about this -- this morning, and when I started to blog about the topic, I noticed that I had been beat to the chase, by the mouth of the south, Barry Shwartz

Mozilla.org, the non-profit organization behind Firefox, Thunderbird and tons of developer oriented tools, was penalized by Google.


Christopher More, Mozilla's Web Production Manager, posted the details of the penalty in the https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/webmasters/pg_4FmjEc_8/discussion. You'd think Mozilla, an organization that is/was mostly funded by Google, would have other means to get the issue resolved.


The penalty was a "manual penalty" due to extremely spammy user generated content. The penalty notification read:


Google has detected user-generated spam on your site. Typically, this kind of spam is found on forum pages, guestbook pages, or in user profiles.


As a result, Google has applied a manual spam action to your site.


So where is this spam? John Mueller of Google responded showing him. Just do a site command search for [https://www.google.com/search?q=site:mozilla.org+cheap+payday+seo] and you will find some samples. It seems to be coming from spammers abusing the blog comments and the addons section, amongst others.


This is a case of Mozilla allowing anyone to come into their home and http://www.seroundtable.com/google-user-comment-penalty-16678.html - it happens all too often and it is sad to see.


John offers some advice, for the comments, you need a spam filter and someone to monitor them. For the add-ons section, John Mueller (Google Employee) said:


For these kinds of sites, it may make sense to allow the community to help with comment moderation (eg. allow them to flag or vote-down spam), and to use the rel=nofollow link microformat to let search engines know that you don't endorse the links in those unmoderated comments.


John also added that in these cases, Google tries to go as "http://www.seroundtable.com/google-targeted-penalty-message-16617.html as possible with our manual actions." So in this case, Mozilla is not fully penalized, just the sections or pages that have this spam on it.

No big deal - spam filter sorts that out...

Google spares no one. I remember a guy sharing Mozilla.org as a High PR website for creation of backlinks in user profiles.
Spam everywhere

No biggie

That clearly shows how inefficient a search algorithm can be, i don't care whether it is a manual or automated penalty.
But, Still penalizing one of the top sites for user spam is something weird.

ok its a big deal actually . What google is upto lately! If this filter is applied in there search engine algorithm SPAM is dead.

It's a big deal because it is a cheap shot against a competitor.
Google should punish the spammers and not the victims.
It's like a Police officer telling a rape victim "you shouldn't wear high heels".

Anyone else see his humiliating selling links reversal? Ha, what a hypocritical knob jockey.

This will only make mozilla kill all the unnecessary spam possibilities on the website and request reconsideration, which more certainly will be received. So a nice thing to talk about but it`s something that will be taken care of very fast. And being a website as someone mentioned that has connections with google, they won`t have any issue getting this problem fixed

Its kinda weird, why penguin didn't detect the spam instead the manual guy did this?

I think this is a good PR for the new manual penalty, the message is : we even do this to our own site so we wont think twice to penalize yours (believing that google own some of mozilla shares)

Well They will get back soon! because I have seen that mozilla apply no follow in there comment's section!

Google has penalized its own sites before.

Mozilla already has a big social media presence anyway.

Mozilla has been getting spammed to death for ages with Angela and Pauls style links

Was only a matter of time...

The update is kind of funny, Google only penalized 1 page for have 12 Megabytes of spam. Of course, google couldn't have been bothered to mention this in the first place to Mozilla.
