I was surprised to find 3 of my sites - which were penalized by Google for time periods ranging 6 months to 2 years - on the first page of Google for the keywords they were ranking before they got penalized. I had not requested any reconsideration to Google, so I guess Google has become very generous all of a sudden !

You've probably just crawled your way out of the sandbox.
 
Kudos for sticking with it that long! I dont have that much patience!
 
Its always a nice surprise isn't it? I had one of mine jump out of the sandbox to page one. Granted there wasn't a lot of competing sites.
 
did you stop building backlinks once they got sandboxed?
 
well ... lol .. 2 years .. how is that generous ? : ))

anyway, Im also interested to know if you carried on link building or if you just left them until now ?
 
i notice tht google sadbox you if you are ranking for a high competitive keyword

i think you could have got out of the sandbox pretty quickly if you had implemented some other techniques.
