Sounds like you are describing google dance. Must have been a pretty authoritative link if that was all it was. You didn't update any content at all? What page rank was this link?

I also think is a G dance or some unfortunate coincidence.
If this is the only thing you have done in the last time then just wait for a few days and see what it happen, if you see it any sign of recovery then probably it will rise again. If not start looking why this happen.

Google has BEEN nuts, but it sounds most likely a dance and it will bounce back higher.

One high PR link would not be the reason for that . Most probably it is a google dance. What was the actual PR of that site?

There is real shit going on at google lately. My main money site fluctuates between position 1 on page 1 and position 5 over a few weeks but this week it has moved at least a couple of times a day! Today it has been at number 1, 3 and 4.
I really feel like I don't know anything anymore.
FYI, PR 3, 5 year old site and has 817 pages indexed.
I, like most experienced marketers, am just waiting it out to see what this is all about because it is more than the google dance but I'm not going to press the panic button yet as my site is original, has loads of fresh, content and does everything manually,including 3-10 social bookmarks a week.

Like everyone else has said, this just sounds like the dance but who knows, could be anything. I have also noticed my serps going apeshit lately for weird reasons. Do you think your site got any social signals? I'm wondering if getting a social signal from "the wrong person" could bring ya down. Im also curious to know if your site has bounced back or not.

Pretty sure Google are implementing a big fix - Reasons are 2 fold.
1) Domain stuffing (mostly for people logged into Google - but not exclusively) - top 30 spots going to the same site - including their "coming soon" and "privacy" page ranking ahead of proper pages from decent competition.
2) They are ditching any reliance the ranks had on their own ill fated (and frankly largely ignored by everyone) "+1" social metric
Probably doing a Panda or Penguin update as well - they usually are...

I agree, this is defo a Google Dance. Sometimes times you will see your ranking go up or down right after a change to your site inbound links. Give it a few days to a week and it should come back... Maybe even at a slightly higher ranking position.
I am surprised though that this has happened with only 1 new link... Maybe it was a really good one with some strong link juice. Just hang on in there!

Good questions to ask.... Depending on the type of link and what the anchor was, it will make all a real difference. How many pages did this link go onto? Was it a blogroll or footer link? Was it distributed throughout EVERY SINGLE PAGE of the high PR site? Or was it a static-like page where the link only shows up on that ONE page? It matters.
It's interesting we are talking about this by the way, because I've been watching one of my sites that I bought a high PR service for over a month or so ago, and it dropped too..... My domain is almost 3 years old so it wasn't an age problem. No other links have been built to my site either. I think it was the high PR service that caused it to drop, but I could be wrong. Service was performed over a month ago, and the links are still up, cause I have checked them.... I wonder if Google is gonna start de-valuing these....?

If you have duplicate content you might be getting hit.
