Google gets reCaptcha

Google has acquired reCAPTCHA, a free CAPTCHA service that also serves as a means of digitizing printed books and newspapers. Among other things, the Mountain View web giant is looking to juice its ever-controversial library-scanning Book Search project.

"Having the text version of documents is important because plain text can be searched, easily rendered on mobile devices and displayed to visually impaired users. So we'll be applying the technology within Google not only to increase fraud and spam protection for Google products but also to improve our books and newspaper scanning process."

So if your bots can't handle reCaptcha, it might be an idea to start loading up on various Google accounts.

If you mean outsourced solving you could be right, I don't know. But reCaptcha can hardly be owned unless you are willing to let me believe there are better OCR tools out in the wild than those used in the largest scanning projects in the world.
