I just got this email from Google MyBusiness.

How to Maximize Your SEO
SEO. SEM. They look similar, but SEO (search engine optimization) means making small changes to your website that might help it naturally show up in search results. Meanwhile, SEM (search engine marketing) means paid search ads. To maximize your SEO power, here are some tips:
• Choose a domain name that's easy to read and descriptive.
• Be sure that your page title is unique and accurate, and sums up your business in a short, info-rich phrase.
• Write different descriptions for each page, especially if you have a lot of pages.
• Make subpage URLs easy to read:yourdomain.com/mysubpage

They're clearly trying to mislead uninformed small business owners by giving them two options, minor on-site changes and PPC. We all know that those are not the only two changes.

I think it's unfortunate that many people who get this email will try to "maximize their SEO power" by changing meta-tags as if we're living in 2007.

Not to mention the blatant lie that SEM is paid search (PPC).

Just wanted to share, any thoughts?

That is irksome, but not surprising at all on Google's part.

People who get that email (and don't know better) will try those tips, not get the results that they want, and then decide that obviously SEO is useless and they need to pay Google because PPC = SEM and SEM = Good. This puts more $ in Google's pocket, and less in service providers by sending a simple email full of disinformation.

There are still a lot of people who think SEO means you keep repeating the same phrase as many times as possible and that will rank you.

Google trying to squeeze more money out of their monopoly by giving misinformation to niave businesses.
