I thought this post might reassure some of you Noobs who don't understand about the Google dance, or what it really means so use these screen shots as a guideline

Bottom line is NEVER panic when you drop in the serps and for goodness sake don't stop building decent links!

I hope this reassures you guys when times get a bit shit

Might sound strange, but when I see my site drop in the serps, i almost get excited anticipating the upswing!

I am getting better though , I dont look at serps every hour anymore

Damn you're so close its scary, its about 10/11 months old!

I have seen 2/3/4 year old sites do the same though, especially after a good news article or viral content but only when the site hasn't done much online promotion or hey suddenly change keywords or whatever

Every site does the dance. I have a site that is ranking front page for several keywords and it has only been up for 40 days. It has done the dance and is still continuing for some keywords.

I wouldn't say all sites dance

I would say 95% depending on the niche, history blah blah

Great post, wish I still had our in house graphics from the SEO company I used to work for. I probably had close to 500-1000 similar examples for a TON of keywords on a variety of domains.

Ok... the duration of dancing in your graphs felt "new site-ish"... I concur that similar patterns happen for established sites, but from my experience the dance durations tend to be notably shorter for sites past the 10 month mark. I haven't tested that observation for more than a year so things may have changed, but it looks like new websites still get the old fashioned treatment which is good to know... just means you need to invest more than 10 months if you plan to play a white hat game otherwise you give up before finding out what could have been...

Good data that illustrates why you should not give up with a new website.

My site was #105 2 weeks ago, #300 last week, today it jumped to #4 for my keyword

The key is to never stop building links, if you get deindexed then its pretty much game over but a sandbox just makes the game more interesting -

The only thing about this is when sending a client a SERP report and your down to page 8 from page 2 and think, what they hell has this company done to my website!?

Then you have to reassure them that its for the better!

That's why you should always tell them before hand, only focus on traffic and brush off serp position as much as you can ;0)
