Okay so i found a nice little niche that i can dominate.

The only problem is most of the traffic is coming from the UK and i live in
    the states.

I notice that when i search for the keywords on google's uk version the top 10 serps are different than the american version

    google.com
    google.co.uk

so i guess my question is what can i do as far as seo goes to make my site come up in the top 10 in the uk?

would i have to buy a domain from the uk, or host it there. dont mean to sound like a total noob.

or could it be from the location of the backlinks that make a difference.

some of the sites come up on both version so that really has me confused.

    thanks in advanced

When Google tries to determine whether your site is appropriate for each of these country-specific search results, it will firstly examine the TLD of your domain name. For example if you have a site called mysite.co.in, then you will appear when a searcher queries at google.co.in for Indian results.
If you don't pass this test, Google will give you a second chance and look at the physical location of where your site is hosted. For example, a site hosted in Canada will appear to be a Canadian site to Google and will appear in the results set for a query on google.ca for Canadian pages.
So the first thing Big G Check is TLD the the location of server

I don't agree. It's alot to do with the backlinks. If you have a load of UK backlinks going to your site, Big G will associate your site being relevant to Google.co.uk . I was working for a big Poker site, hosting was UK but TLD was .com, We were not allowed to make too many links from other TLD's other than .com . A few is ok, as long as 70% above are your desired TLD

Posting links to UK directories, UK Classifieds, Blog related to UK will help a lot........It does not matter where your server is located as most of the sites are hosted in US servers for websites from all over the world.

It all depends how you have worked out your SEO plan.

Do postings in UK section of Directories, submission websites and you are done, you will there in UK results as well.

Local hosting is important. Your webpage will typically load faster for people and how fast your page will load plays a part of the bigger picture.

It's not the only factor but you would be silly to ignore it. Can anyone register .co.uk domains or is it similar to Australia domains .com.au where you need to have a registered business to purchase the domain name?

    Hey,
I've encountered one thing similar to yours.
My site(within half a month) resides in the first page of google.co.uk for exact keyword.
And my site is hosting in UK.
So the hosting location is the point? I think so.

    html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-gb" lang="en-gb" dir="ltr">
    <meta name="language" content="uk" />

You can add some of this info to your page so you can point out google where your pages is targeted.

a co.uk domain will help but putting above will also help. Have seen enough examples of non co.uk domains on nr 1.

as said above links from co.uk domains also help

Many asian websites are hosted on US servers, will that mean that they will not rank well in Asia, I dont think location of server has any value or should have any value.

Seems like location of the server is of value. I read somewhere that google also checks how fast pages load, the faster the better.

In this example, if you are hosted in the uk this is good for faster speed. Is your .co.uk domain hosted in the us, loading speeds might be slower.

These are small things but every small thing does add up to improving your ranking.

Ignore all those OLD answers. There is only 1 Answer to this NOW:
Go to Google Webmaster Tools (Sitemaps) --> Site configuration --> Settings --> Geographic target (change your target location to United Kingdom)

After Google updates, your site will show like this in SERP even your hosting is in US or other places.

    www.yoursite.com/ - United Kingdom - Cached - Similar

My domain is .com and I host with Hostgator in the US. But I get good ranking in google.co.uk by doing this. Google see my site as UK site.

    Localalized ranking follows these priorities..

Language used (Spanish for Latin America, English for Uk / Ca / US etc)
Tld extension (yes co.uk ranks better in UK)
server location (is checked but only for big enough sites)

The nature / location of backlinks you've has an influence too, but it is not intentionally programmed. I don't think there is an intentional "let's see how many Russian links this guy has, if he has 200 he is Russian" process. The system just weighs 20 links from Germany, 40 from France, 50 from Russia and 80 from China, and gives you a proportional ranking in the Serps with these languages / localizations

Also true, but you know what shit you risk playing innocent, transparent an clueless with Google about your goals?:D

I don't think that ALL kind of sites are advised to verify themselves with GOOOOGLE.

In particular, if you aren't 101% whitehat - DO NOT
