Google announced that it would start increasing ranking of sites that use Encryption. You can read about it here
    Code:
    http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/https-as-ranking-signal_6.html
I wanted to discuss this new change with you guys. Are you guys going to start installing encryption on your sites?

What about content based sites like adwords/affiliate blogs? I don't see the point of encryption on those sites. Do you think Encryption would be worth it?

I also have an eCommerce site that is encrypted, however the only pages that are encrypted are the pages with sensitive information (Login Pages/Checkout/ect...) Encrypting all of my pages would slow down my site (Magento) significantly. Do you think encryption on all pages would be worth it?

Ultimately I just want to start some meaningful conversation on how to use this change to benefit our sites.

It's just a small percentage in advantage you get.

Though in heavy competitive SEO niches, you have to get everything you can :)
Otherwise for that small niche site I wouldn't recommend the hassle.

Main thing is when you do it, do it right.

As a beginning, the http to https redirection code is:
    Code:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
Also they count it only when really everything is encrypted, including all imgs, scripts, css, fonts,.. etc.
Then you get that "identiy approved" thing in the top url-bar.

Further keep in mind to add the https-version to Webmaster Tools, it's not the same as http.
Same as that all URLs internal have to be https now, and the sitemaps urls changed, etc.

I thing Wordress SEO by Yoast does already a good job for as you can force https, and it also changes the canonical-tags for you. But I haven't tested it well enough.

As you said for Magento that it's slow, I'm not sure if it's because of Magento or because of your not good enough server. Usually it's the server, that means it's time to upgrade, if you want to use the advantage of https.

Optional: Google is looking for a 2048-bit encryption, so the higher you can get the better

Bigger projects who use own servers shall set-up their own certificates like with https://www.geotrust.com

Can you find trusted SSL certs for free?
If the cert is not trusted by browsers it can scare off the visitors.
