Hi

I was hoping someone could help to explain this.

If I am trying to dominate a local market in AUS example keyword: sydney dentist - do I then need a .com.au domain in order for the searches from Google AUS to show my domain ?

My understanding so far is that you will need .com.au in order to be in the market because if you have just a .com or .net then my understanding is that it's pretty much useless because everytime you use the Google AUS search it will eliminate any other domains except for .com.au domains.

Please correct me if I'm wrong... because it's freakin hard to have multiple websites with .com.au in Australia due to restrictions of only (1) domain per registered business... DAM government...

that's not true, you can rank non .com.au's for Google Australia. .com.au's are definetly given more priority though when ranking in the Australian engine, Im not sure how much more but it's noticeable. If you can find an EMD for a .com or .net, .co whatever and you do your offsite and onsite seo well enough, you can outrank them depending on their strength .com.au wont matter that much

when i search in google (i'm in australia), australian sites usually come up before any other sites, like US sites, but it really depends on what i'm looking for. but that doesn't mean other sites don't come up at all, australian ones are the priority though.

Thanks guys... currently I'm testing a local market niche without a .com.au domain and see how I can out rank those .com.au #1st page competitors.... hopefully it will work... but I guess it's going to be a losing battle since Google AUS prioritizes .com.au domains more.... even if my SEO on/off is done correctly

wonder if anyone has seen a non .com.au domain outranked other .com.au domains in a local niche market before... love to hear or see an example

I have a lot of Adsense sites targeted towards Australians viewers and having a .com.au has placed me at the top of searches for keywords that are highly competitive in the US.

How did you get ranked higher for US searches if your intended target was AUS market with .com.au ???? I'm confused... but great to hear you are dominating..

You can rank for Aus searches in Aus for non .com.au domains.

Trick is to use G's places and other map placement services to list your URL with.

also, make sure that you have enough onsite text with the local address, especially in your contact us.

that will work a treat.

great ... I'm going to give this a try

that's because you are searching google from an aussie location

I'm ranked #1 for my business website www.nsit.biz. Do a Google.com.au search for computer help north shore, computer support north shore & you'll see I'm #1 (yay, go me!)

I'm also #3 for IT support north shore - still working on that one.

Anyways, it doesn't matter what domain you have - I'm doing it with a .biz (plus a little bit of work of coruse).

If you use Google's Webmaster Tools (You should) you can specify Geo-Targeting for your domain if its a global TLD (.com, .net, or .org). Under site configuration > settings is where you can change this information. If you already are using .com.au for example it is automatically geo-targeted by Google and will be unable to change it.

I feel this eliminates the true need of a geo-target TLD. However, I still prefer to register both the .com and .com.geo. Set the .com to 301 redirect to the geo targeted domain and build back links on both addresses.

The domain extension isn't really your problem - getting links from .com.au's is.

Beleive me on this. I have a couple of hundred thousand auto approve's, with about 2000 of them being .com.au's

I usually only market to Aussies through G.com.au and it isn't any harder with a .com than a .com.au

try buying a couple of juicy .com.au links and then you'll see some results.

That is amazing... how long did it take you to get to that position? and was your linking method to .com.au websites or just standard SEO backlink methods?

Don't post your site - if it wasn't thursday drinking night I'd be busy for hours with that info.
