I saw a site with PR 3, but only 1 backlink. It has 1500 pages indexed in google, 25000 indexed in MSN, 250 indexed in yahoo

Just wonder how a site can do that without backlinks?

It may have backlinks to the inner pages or backlinks that is just not showing in G but is in Y or B.

Links that are not web pages are not reported but still carry weight. If it is linked to in some xml feeds that have high PR it will still flow in even though you will not find them reported in G.

Well the only thing that matters for PR is Google and there is no way you have 1500 indexed pages in Google with just one backlink. Google shows very few of your backlinks. I have a site with over 5k backlinks that are indexed in Google and Google shows 9 of them when you do a link: search.

The possibility exists that it can be fake but there might be inner pages with backlinks.
Inner pages with good backlinks and Page Rank can weigh trust onto the main domain.

For Example: G is PR10 but their sub domain: knot*G*c o m is PR 7.

If I may ask... Which website is this?

PR is reported by http://seoquake.com/. That 1 backlink isn't authority link at all. Its root domain is only PR 4.

Perhaps your site have redirected (301 redirect) to a PR3 domain therefore the g-toolbar shows the PR3 in your domain. So that is fake!

301 redirect is the best method to preserve your current
search engine rankings when redirecting web pages or a web
site. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".
After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is
noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new
location or file name. You implement the 301 redirect by
    creating a .htaccess file.

I bought one like that earlier this year, it had 42 backlinks (none higher than pr2 that I could see, and yet my site had a PR3 (lost it April2 to a PR2)

I scratched my head, and said eh! whatever!

I've often wondered, what would happen if you had simply shut down a high pr site, to point all it's juice at your primary money site? Would the jump in pagerank be quite noticeable?

Say Site 1 had 20,000 backlinks, and site 2 had 20,000 backlinks.

Would you jump in serps overnight?

I'm sure I'm not the first to consider this, so there is probably very little benefit, but was wondering just the same.

No, PR is gained by incoming links, you can have a 10 year old site with no links and it will have a PR of 0.

While you would gain most of the PR of the redirected links if you did the redirects correctly it would only help you in the serps if those links had the proper anchor text.

For example of your site was about cars and the redirected site was about horses your PR would go up but it would not help you rank better for any of you car keywords.

Well, Like many I have the .net to go along with my .com

I was contemplating building up backlinks and promoting the .net site using the same keywords, and then when it's ranking high, hitting it with a 301 to shoot my money site up.
