If you're were using Outlook then you might like Outlook Express. Thunderbird has lots going for it and comes in a portable version so it makes it easy as pie to try.

Two others I enjoy using are i.Scribe (free ver of InScribe) and Ultrafunk Popcorn. Both are stand alones - no install needed.

Why would outlook be no good for this?

Set up some rules to direct mail to specific folders or something..

Just use gmail and never look back, setup thunderbird for a local backup if you are paranoid. There are ways to upload all your current mail into gmail also.

Thunderbird is my favorite. I have a dozen e-mail accounts that I check on a regular basis, and Thunderbird has proven to be the easiest solution.

I use Thunderbird and I really like it. It's easy to use and usually always works. Haven't had any problems.
