Going homeless, need advice

Damn, it's scary to think that I am almost in the same position as you. Currently my car is dead and I don't have the financial setup to fix it... I mean, I could use a credit card but I'm not a fan of dealing with that noise. I'm really sorry to hear you're going through a rough time, but I hope you feel a little better knowing that there are others out there like myself that aren't staying afloat either. Keep your head up. Try and find under the table jobs until you find a new career or something. I thought about going into the air force, but I would need transportation to get to the recruiting center and keep up with their PT. There's no way I can manage getting to and fro. I wish you the best!

You do realise that redrubies is female, right?

No, didn't know, thanks for letting me know. What I said applies for women as well. Granted it's usually men wrecked in court, it's risky business either way. Glad she came out okay. Have money? = Protect yourself. My entire point.

And no I'm not sexist.

Even middle class has a ton of expenses and alot of taxes they have to pay. America is not the land of opportunity in the 21st century. Developing nations with low taxes and cost of living along with quality internet are the best places.
Why is it the land of opportunity for my kids but not the land of opportunity for you? It's not like I am paying my daughter's $2500 a month rent in an expensive city in the US. A city that she chose to be in because that's where she wanted to be. She lives with her boyfriend and they got a roommate, and they split the bills. My daughter makes lists and crosses things off as she achieves what she wants. In two months, she is going to Italy on her dream vacation. It's another thing she will be crossing off her list. You have to take the bull by the horns when you want something. You can't expect things to be handed to you. Why are you having so much trouble functioning in the US? I am not being sarcastic. I would honestly like to know.

The woman's actually right here dude. You seem to have a negative mindset about money. I think that's what's holding you back from achieving. You need to accept that you personally are responsible for your own success or failure in this world. Rich people aren't holding ypu back, only you. Find a field of work you want to do and pursue it. Stop hanging out on message boards all day and work.

I'm not expecting things to be handed to me, I just don't like getting ripped off by services that are several times more expensive for the same quality and paying high taxes.

Walk a mile in my shoes. It's not the men who "usually get wrecked in court." Men have no clue what happens when they drop the ball and the woman is left to pick up the pieces. Child support is based on a formula and the formula is not all that. We won't even get into what happens when child support ends at 18 and little Junior goes off to college. Or when little Junior decides to go to college, has a part time job, and lives home. I have one kid left in college. He's getting all A's. He wants to be a doctor. His car insurance is $300 a month. He has a job, but not full time because he has to study to keep up his grades. Who do you think is supporting him? It sure as hell isn't his father.

LMAO, I don't have a negative mindset about money I have a realist.

Why spend $1,000+/month on a decent place when I could spend $300/month for even better quality
Why spend $60/month on slow internet when I could spend $10/month for internet that is several times faster
Why spend $180/month on health insurance when I could spend $15/month.

By the time one takes to make the money to live in America, they would already have thousands to put in savings and investments by living in a place that is developing.

You couldn't pay me to live in another country. I'll pay the high internet and whatever else. I love it here. I could never live that far from my family. To each their own.

I'm single without much family members that I see on a regular basis (just Xmas). So for me it isn't much of an email an issue to move to another country. And since I'm young the tax savings and cost of living savings will benefit me greatly by the time middle aged

Walk a mile in my shoes. It's not the men who "usually get wrecked in court." Men have no clue what happens when they drop the ball and the woman is left to pick up the pieces.

A record 37% of married mothers have a higher income than their husbands according to the US Census Bureau. But only 3% of divorcing men are paid alimony.

Another way to say it is 97% of the receivers of alimony are women, not men. Judges are humans. And humans come with a host of preconceptions about what men and women should and should not do.

Women do and will continue to use children as pawns. They know how to abuse a system that was largely set up in the 1950's to assist in the expenses of child rearing that 2 people consented to. Now women have joined the work force in unprecedented numbers, have access to birth control... which frees them from constraints of the past. And if times have progressed for women, then why are men still stuck in the 50's?

Furthermore, as it stands now, there is no way to account for how funds are being used "for the children". Do women see how significant a problem this is? Do they even care? And when divorce does happen, even when child support is unwarranted it's still automatically assumed to be part of the case. Sure, it's usually the women making a lifelong commitment to take care of the children. But how many men are even given a chance? The way I see it, if an ex-husband is willing to make a life long commitment to his children, there should be no state intrusion or court ordered child support.

I'm not implying that women have it "easier". But I do feel the current system we have is outdated. And I do feel it was setup primarily for the financial benefit of wives more than husbands. Look at NFL players these days. They get signed and suddenly every woman and their sister wants to have a child with them. Then these guys wind up paying $10k / month to each woman in child support. Nobody has any idea where most that money is really going. Some of these guys pay $50k+ / month then after their career and contracts end they're STILL FORCED to pay these ridiculous fees or they can go to jail.

Do you know what the #1 cause of death is for pregnant women?

It's homicide.

Usually by their husbands / ex-husbands. I'm certainly not implying that it's ok for men to kill their pregnant wives. But there's got to be some serious political misgoings.. some deeply embedded societal triggers... SOMETHING WRONG in this society that could make a man so angry to wanna kill the mother of his unborn child. If I had to "walk a mile" in your shoes, or a man who's on death row cause some money hungry woman was trying to bankrupt him through a system that would legally allow her to do it, I think I'd prefer your shoes.

Divorce is messy. It's mess for both. And yes, unfortunately there are winners and losers. I know you're a strong woman. An ambitious person. I admire you for that. I don't know a thing about your husband, your personal life or your divorce. But all this crap I wrote... it's a large reason I'll never have kids. I think people should be required to have a license to have children. At least $500,000 in the bank per child for the man and woman. If they don't have that money, and they consent to having a child both should be thrown in jail. Unplanned pregnancies pose one of the most serious of health risks to a child. From women who don't wanna have the children to men to abortions to financial problems.... divorce.... jail... murder.... death row.... it's a mess.

$300 / month for insurance? You know you can save 15% or more by switching to Geico? :D

Seriously, I pay $85 / month for insurance. I know it's higher for kids but it certainly should be 350% higher. That's crazy high.

Just noticed this thread. I live in Central New Jersey OP. If you need any help or advice just shoot me a PM.

I'm on a special alumni list for a very expensive university I graduated from years ago. Every 2 weeks I get a huge list of very unique, valuable, hard to find job offers. It's a very long, awesome list. And I'm not sure why I still get it but if you want, I can forward you the list twice a month.

There are AWESOME job opportunities on it. No garbage like Mickey D's or working at Dunkin Donuts. There are a lot of rich professors, business owners, etc who post on this list cause they know it gets mailed out to educated alumni. With that said, at least 40% of the job offers you don't even need experience. There are tons of people offering $20-$30 an hour for simple things like being an office assistant to all sorts of things.

Also, this has got to be said. But if there is 1 thing my parents nailed through my head when I was young, it was to SAVE MONEY and live FAR BELOW my means.

Not all my brothers took that advice. Some had to buy huge homes and I have 1 brother specifically who makes 2 1/2 times more than I do, but has 4 times less in his bank. I'm very proud of the fact that I live like a frugal, jew bastard, in a relatively small home. I have no reservation in admitting that I buy discount everything. Discount veggies, meat, anything that is on sale. I make my own soaps and detergents. I eat out maybe once a month at most. And I'm always looking for the cheap way to do things. I'm probably 1 of very few people who has a separate bank account just for my dog (under my name of course lol). I put away $30 every week in that account. Cause I know she has heart issues, one day she is going to need an expensive heart valve surgery, and I started saving for it quite literally the same week I got her (she was a rescue dog).

In a very strange way, I feel like serving time also helped me a lot. When you are forced to live for a long enough time period without any real material items, you very quickly learn what's important in life and what is not.

A new car is not important to me. Neither is a new house, new clothes, new sneakers, new anything. I've been going to CollingWood flea market since I was 6, I'm now 32 and I still go. What's funny, I rarely spend more than $20 when I do go. I just like to walk around and see what everyone is selling.

The point I'm trying to make here, you can be the Vice President of a well known brokerage firm, make half a million a year but still be broke as fuck. Never forget I told you that.

Cheers,

-Rob

When a woman is left to pick up the pieces? LOL it's women who are primarily the beneficiaries in most (not all) divorces. Child Support is a scam. Father's rights are largely overlooked in this country because it's not the economy's benefit (as women have the purchasing power). Not saying this is you, but a common trend here in the states is when women have children they can't afford they're called "Strong Independent women" and usually sponsored by the State via welfare/Child Support/other benefits. If a man has children he can't afford, he's called a deadbeat lowlife and thrown in jail for not paying CS. Often these fathers lose their custody and only can visit on weekends while suffering heavily paying to support the mother and his children. Yes, child support (based on an arbitrary number made up by greedy lawyers who profit from the system), alimony, custody laws that automatically give mothers the custody most often, among other things are point towards MEN, not women who are usually getting the short end of the stick.

Now in your situation, let's ask a rhetorical question. What about the single fathers out here who procreated with unfit mothers or God forbid tragedy struck and he has to raise his children as the sole parent?

Honestly, with this system, the men are financially ruined, the women go morally bankrupt, and the innocent victims in all this, the children grow up thinking this is "normal" interaction between man and woman.

It depends on the county where the car is registered and the type of car as well as insurance company, some charge much more than others.

The system is set up by men, for men. The reason why NFL players and celebrities pay a lot in child support is because they make a lot of money. Child support is a formula that is based on income and bills. Water, electric, mortgage, etc all factor into child support. It's not a matter of "how much is going towards the child" because even the mortgage benefits the child. The children are supposed to be in the same lifestyle as before the divorce. That is what the law says, but that is certainly not the case. Income goes way down, but the things you had before the divorce still have to be paid for. Many single mothers lose their homes. I went out with my ex husband for 6 years before we married. We were married for 14 years. Together for a total of 20 years. The plans we made together were not made spur of the moment. He left the marriage. We had joint custody. He could have seen the kids whenever he wanted. There were no set days. I worked from home. To be honest, I would have loved to have been able to work in peace without kids constantly being underfoot. I would have loved to have had help taking the kids to their sports and other activities. Their father chose not to be very active. He saw the kids when he felt like it. I was in total exhaustion paying a high mortgage that was not high when I was married, and working when the kids were in school or sleeping. I did not get much sleep for years. Walk in the shoes of a single mother. Men have no idea unless 1) they have custody of the kids and 2) their wife was the major breadwinner.

As for car insurance, my son is a 20 year old, and we are in a state with one of the highest costs of living in the country. All the young men pay around that, and some pay higher. It's not unusual at all.

Child support should just b enough to cover the basic costs of living I'd the spouse with child custody cannot afford. Anything more is a legal ripoff.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Child support is not "based on an arbitrary number made up by greedy lawyers who profit from the system" Lawyers did not make up the child support formula. LOL Nor do they get a cut of it. A divorce lawyer charges a fee to represent people in divorce cases. If the person can't afford an attorney, they can ask for a child support advocate provided by the court. They can also ask for a mediator provided by the court.

Since you know so much about how this all works, then I'm sure Your Wiseness knows what happens to the woman who is left to pick up the pieces. Let's take my case as a for instance. My ex husband made about 140,000 a year. I made about 30k a year from working at home, because we agreed that I would stay home and take care of the children. He wanted his wife home and I didn't have a problem with it. So. The prices of the homes we lived in reflected this income. Our cars reflected this income. The way our children dressed reflected this income. We did not live beyond our means and had no debt. So...Daddy leaves the nest. Child support was $375 a week which came out to $19,500 a year. I had a good lawyer. This is the child support formula that men claim is so much in favor of the woman. 140k went down to 19k, but the mortage, great neighborhood, music lessons, education, etc is not supposed to change for the sake of the children, according to the law. Who is supposed to pick up the difference in income?

So you are soon homeless?
Dont fucking bother with IM.
Go out and get a 9-5 then come back and start-over.

Dont get me wrong, i am not rude but most people here instantly starts talking about different IM ventures. Forget about that and get a normal job so you can afford an apartment, then from there start your IM journey again and works less with your 9-5 job.

Apparently, he was making more than 4xs what you made for 14 years straight? Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me.

You said you have an independent daughter out on her own. Sounds like she's supporting herself now. So there's only 1 son left with expensive car insurance, correct? Are you saying that $1,500 / month doesn't cover his $300 car insurance, food, clothes, and whatever else he needs?

For 14 years your husband was the breadwinner making $140k / year .... giving your children a good life.... while you stayed at home taking care of the children and working.

I'm really curious what YOU THINK he should be paying right now? What you would think is "fair" ? $2000 ? $3000 ? $4000 month ?
If he was making as much as you those 14 years you'd be getting like $200 month in child support right now... if anything at all.

Furthermore, if your son is old enough to drive he is OLD ENOUGH TO PAY HIS CAR INSURANCE. That was 1 very strict rule my mother had. My parents bought the car but if I stopped paying car insurance I was NOT DRIVING.

When I was 17 and got my first car. I went and applied to a car wash that paid $4/hour but with tips equated to roughly $28 /hour or $800 / month. I was going to college full time and working part time 4 days / week. 60% of college was paid in by grants and scholarships then 40% I had to take out loans for. I was able to pay car insurance but lived mostly broke for 4 years. Then mostly broke for another 4-5 years after graduating. And only gained financial footing in my life about 3-4 years ago.

Let's face it, it's hard enough for your average person to support themselves these days nevermind children. But for 14 years of your adult life you had the privilege of a man financially supporting you and your children. The privilege of not really needing to worry about $$$ or being the bread winner. And yes I know you took care of the kids. You worked online. You're a great mother. Extremely smart. Worked your ass off I'm sure....

But the fact remains that 63% of married women are being supported largely by their husbands and come divorce time >>>97% of those women are receiving alimony, NOT THE HUSBANDS. And what's getting worse, it's no longer just "alimony" in many states it's turning to "lifetime alimony". That is pure, unadulterated horseshit no matter what any women claim.

And I'll tell you what, if women really wanna complain about child support, lets flip alimony so it's 97% of WOMEN paying MEN then we can talk about child support.

Let's look at some REAL FIGURES.

In 2014 there was $4 billion in unpaid child support. 83% of the time custody goes to the MOTHER. So thats $3.3 billion that women didn't receive in child support.

BUT then there is alimony. In 2014 there was $12.4 billion in alimony PAID to divorcees. Since 97% of those collecting are women that's $12.0 billion PAID to women.

I'm not focusing solely on child support or alimony. I'm focusing on most the money that is exchanged after divorce. Most the money that is taken out of 1 persons bank and goes to another. And right now, women are >>$8,700,000,000 AHEAD of men in the court system.

I know this figure doesn't apply to you directly, but it applies to ALL divorced women. Sure this system was "built by men". But it was built my men FOR WOMEN. In a way, men built the system as a financial incentive for women to MARRY MEN in the first place. So they can get those alimony checks for life. And regardless of what child support certain women aren't getting, women are the ones GETTING THE MONEY. Men are the ones being raped in court. Don't get it twisted.

I have 4 married brothers. My 2 oldest brothers have kids. My oldest brother makes a little more than $400k / year and has 3 kids. His wife hasn't worked in at least 20 years. Even before the kids she wasn't working. Sits home all day "taking care of the kids" while the kids are AT SCHOOL FFS. Then the kids come home, she makes them some food and sends them off to karate/fencing/golf practice or whatever fancy shit my brother pays for. She goes back home and does whatever she wants. 80% of her days are spent doing basically nothing at all. And if they ever get divorced SHE is getting custody of the kids, SHE is getting alimony, SHE is getting child support, and SHE will live the rest of her life doing whatever the hell she wants while receiving fat checks every month.

Let's just put it this way. We might live in a patriarchal society, but to me that just means "save the women". It's usually wives and daughters who get spoiled, not husbands and sons. When a boat sinks, we save all the women and children. Let all the men die. Nobody GAF. Man gets divorced, give the kids to the wife. Give alimony to the wife. Give everything to the wife. Take his whole house and give it to the wife.

Look at crime tv. It's all about women. Nobody wants to watch a woman murdering her husband cause society is not designed to care about men. We are disposable. Send us all to war so we can die. Nobody cares. When you kill your husband just claim sexual abuse and you'll be out in 5 years. If you're a guy you're finished for life. We wanna see the poor, helpless, attractive slain woman on the news.... not some random ugly dude.

We may call this a "'patriarchal" system but in reality it's the exact opposite. Men's ego just need to believe we control the world when we really don't. It's women spinning their webs in the background entrapping men with their vaginas. Go back in history, so many wars have been started or stopped cause of women. There was 1 war where the queen told all women to stop having sex with their husbands till the war ended. Don't remember the name of the war but it took 2 weeks for that war to end. Women steer evolution, not men. Men don't care about expensive cars, big homes or money. We don't care about going to the gym, having a nice job, looking good, having rich friends, being dominant, etc. We do all of this shit cause it's what >>>WOMEN WANT. When a man wants a date, we gotta get rejected 30... if not 100 times to find someone. It's us dealing with the rejection. When a woman wants a date, all she's gotta do is blink twice and nod.

Let's just put it this way, the real commodity on planet Earth is the vagina. Not the penis.

Sure, there are many societies where women are oppressed but men oppress women out of fear of opening pandora's box aka "the true power of vagina". Right now in the US, we are witnessing this firsthand. Why are population rates exploding in all the countries where women are oppressed? While in the US, where men yell and smash their arms like apes but women are busy spinning webs in court.... our population is barely rising?

It's cause men NEED women but women only NEED access to mens money and sperm. Once women assert their true power across the world, you will arm yourselves and initiate a world wide sex ban at which point men will self destruct from sex deprivation and kill off the entire male race. There will be no men left except for Brad Pitt frozen in a freezer. Then women will rename Venus to Earth and Earth to Venus and instead of getting $9 billion / year by divorcing us you'll control all the money in the world which we all know has been the real plan since the beginning of time. :-)

ps. One last remark about your sons car insurance. Unless you live in Detroit your sons car insurance should NOT be that high. I live in NJ which is rated the #2 for highest car insurance in the US. And only reason I'm focused on this is you said you live within your means. But you also said your son can't afford his own car insurance and at that high a cost.... you're either getting seriously ripped off OR more simply you're living outside your means. I don't like telling people how they should raise kids but if that was my son I'd get him a shitty 98 honda civic, call around, negotiate, and you should be able to cut that cost in half. Thats absurdly high for someone who can't even afford their own car insurance.

This topic seems to be headed in a completely different direction now, lol.

However, I think what Redrubies' original point was that despite her hardships and her husband leaving, her daughter has become incredibly independent and her son is also doing alright. Despite the fact that her income was drastically reduced, there were more than enough opportunities for both of her children to go out and follow their dreams. All because there is PLENTY of opportunity here in the United States. You just have to have the fortitude to seize that opportunity when it appears.
