Hi everyone, thanks for clicking on my catchy thread! :D

I am creating a seo software, and without getting too far in depth of what it is, I would like to ask a question about hosting. I grabbed a domain name and web space from godaddy. Now I am reading that, well from what I've heard anyways, that if godaddy gets a complaint, they can shut your website down and keep your domain name all to themselves. So naturally, I am now paranoid of godaddy. I would like to keep the domain name, though, but I guess can think of a different name. What is anyone's opinion on this? Can/should I keep the domain name at godaddy, but grab a server space somewhere else? Overseas perhaps, where they dont care about complaints? Switch to a different domain provider altogether? Any insight is truly welcome. Thanks!

If you're a fan of sleeping at nights and not having constant headaches then go away from GoDaddy now!

Domain wise - Namecheap are a good provider, so are Name.com. If you're doing dodgy stuff and expect a lot of complaints then Internet.bs are good. And yes - the stories of GoDaddy keeping domains are true. Even though they are not allowed to do that and you would eventually get your domain back, it would take you ages to fight them and you would obviously lose a lot of business in the meantime.

Hosting wise - GoDaddy are absolutely horrible. Literally one of the very worst hosting providers out there. I would rather go with a $1/mo one man show than with them. But if you want stability then choose one of the big ones (HG/BlueHost etc.) - or if you want anonymity and don't want your hosting provider react to complaints then go offshore. Two offshore hosting companies I've used are MediaOn (based in Turkey - fantastic customer support but they require domains to be registered with them as well and plans aren't all that great) and ScorpioHost (Netherlands).
 
I'm with bryanon. Stay away from GoDaddy. They are worst host I have ever used. They shut down sites in under a milisecond for unwarranted reasons. Their tolerance level can be compared to a newborn baby, and while their rep in the market may be good (to general consumers) they are not suitable for blackhatters, or advanced internet users.
 
godaddy usually just steals domain name ideas if you use their search. I don't think they steal domain names that are already registered on a regular basis.

They do both but there are enough reports already.

OP, run!! If you used your real name you shouldn't have a problem transferring but sometimes GD asks for a scanned ID before unlocking a domain.

ill second this .. i have domains reged at godaddy ...i think if you cancel omains they dont just release them but try toauction them as premium names...


also when i was first getting into the web thingthere were three really cool name i thought of .. they showed avail when i checked on thier search ... 18 hours later all three were premium names for $2500 ... one sure might have been someone else pick/guessed my idea .. but all three .. yeah bull .. so if i do anything with domains now i usualy use a whois to check domain ideas and only go to godaddy to immediately buy the name
 
I suggest always Internet.bs I think that its the number 1!!
godaddy is for girls ;)
 
Really great info and timely for me as I am buying domains this weekend. do not like godaddy, have had the same thing happen to me about the name search and a couple of years ago got a couple of names from them then transferred to hostgator, it was a nightmare for some reason.
 
Godaddy are about playboy babes. Not about domains and hosting; spam also.
Plus, their CEO is a bad person. Why give him money..

Use a dedicated hosting company like hostgator, justhost, bluehost... There are plenty. They all have cPanel so you can migrate within minutes.
As for domains - Use companies like name.com, namecheap, internetbs.net rather than others.

you can always have 3rd part name servers and use go daddy. on such way go daddy wont be able to take your domain away
 
Godaddy is a nightmare. I can't tell you how many times I had problems with them. My favorite registrar by far is Moniker. Had domains with them for years and never had a problem.
 
As a general rule, you should always keep your hosting seperate from your domain registrar.

That being said, I'm a huge fan of Name.com
 
GoDaddy hosting blows!

Domain prices are reasonable though. (usually)

godaddy is only good for domain purchase, and their auction service.
although as mentioned above, namecheap, names.com are also good.

stay away from godaddy.

That's it ...I use them to snag aged domains related to whatever niches I'm working in and then transfer the domains to Namecheap. Yea it's pricey, cause you are looking at Auction Fee + Renewal Fee + Private WhoIs + Transfer Fee. I can't complain though, love getting 10 year old archived domains at $40 a pop after everything is said and done!

oh another thought the godaddy hosting sucks more dick than a $2 hooker on friday night .. i use it now ... im going to test out some of the ofshore suggestions on this blog and move ...

godaddy hosting uses their own proprietary webmin ... all the domains on your act are in folders on the primary domains ... every action opens a new window ... a godaddy human muppet has to aprove all new domains on the act ... alll subdomains ... all scripts that are auto installed freakin everything ..... ive used other hosts in the past to have a domain up and wp installed in just a couple minutes ... with them its like a 3 ~ 6 hour process...

godaddy for white hat site domains only no hosting or you will be frusterated to no end
 
you should probably find a site that wont shut shut your business down after just a few complaints
 
I had close to sixty domains with them, by the time I got everything transferred over to another provider......I lost about six of them. What made things worse, some of them I lost during transfer...go figure. They say they will give it back to you if you pay them some ungodly amount of money. But from what I have heard from others, that is not always the case. I just remember that it was a huge nightmare for me. They do not need to provide you with documentation or proof of anything. My opinion is this, they take higher ranking domains and hold on to them, and then resell them. I am sure they probably made some decent money on mine. They are crooks, and work their TOS so that they can get away with it.
