Is anyone else concerned that once it's discovered by Google, any sites using this strategy may not be looking forward to a rosy future in the SERPS? Or are people thinking along the old argument that a competitor could have put that link in as a way to sabotage you so, it can't incur a penalty?

I'm sure it will be nerfed sometime in the future. But I don't think Google will penalize a site with this link on it since that redirect feature has a legitimate use.
 
I show no PR for that specific page and no anchor text. You can start a YouTube channel and have a ******** link, it doesn't mean you get the pr9 link juice, you just get the link juice for that specific page.
 
Same method can be found on mark rushworths website, he posted it back in february i was skeptical when i first saw it and never bothered to give it a try. I may give it a whirl now fellow BHW members are giving it a go :D
