I am planning to do a giveaway through shoutouts of pages with a large following ( some mass and some niche)
This is basically to gain followers. Thinking of making the account private and asking people to follow the page to enter the giveaway.

Is it a good idea? Any thoughts or suggestions?

It can be a good idea if done properly. Sometimes the cost of acquiring entries combined with the cost of what you have to give to the winner isn't worth the reward, so it really depends on the scenario. I would suggest you focus on using the giveaway as a tool to build a list (email, messenger, etc). Then you can market to them as you please.

Also, make sure you are sending a runner up discount to everyone who enters your giveaway and doesn't win. This can be a great way to drive a few sales. Hope that helps!

I have managed to get to a couple of page with 150-200k followers who have agreed to do shoutouts for 20-30$

in total getting 6 posts and 6 stories.

assuming the entries and decent. Hoping to gain about 4-5k followers for this.
Does this sound possible?
 
For $20 - $30 it doesn't sound like you'll get much from them. With influencers, you'll get burned in the beginning while you understand what metrics to look for and how to spot fakes.

There's a detailed guide here about giveaways, and focuses more on earning revenue rather than followes. Search around and you'll find it.
 
The thing with giveaways is that the followers you get are usually low quality ones - most will stop following you after it's over, others will not engage since they did not start following you due to the content in the first place.
In extreme cases it can destroy the account completely (very rarely).
 
Deleted member 15724 is right. I don't think you'll get what you're expecting but it's good to try it out once and see if it'l work for you or not.
 
Will it be fake giveaway ?
 
From what I've seen, it's good to make sure that the prize is actually targeted to a niche. That way, there's less dropoff after the contest is over (there always is, but it can be lowered if you have people who are interested in that niche).

Try and build an email list as well.
 
As mentioned, it can be good to boost your follower count. But the quality of followers is low and many will unfollow after the giveaway is over. Would work great in scale. Try to target your audience as best as possible.

Decided to go ahead with it in a following manner.

will call it the 10k giveaway and say that once we reach 10k followers we will give 10 of our followers a giftbox worth XXX


Hopefully this will get more people interested to follow us.


PS- this is just to get the page up to its first 10k of mediocre followers will grow they page better later.
 
Interesting journey, even though it's not in that section. I like the idea of using "influencers" on IG.
