I have been in the freelancing field since 2018. Started out as a copywriter then AI come and I learned digital marketing especially email marketing, automation and social media management. However, it seems like the freelance market has become over saturated and its taking me months to land a gig. I have all the skills required but i cant seem to navigate the job market. Every job post attracts 100s of application and it seems like an impossible mission. Help me with skills to survive a crowded freelance market.

I completely understand your frustration. The market is definitely crowded, especially with AI changing the game. Since you already have a solid background in email marketing and automation, maybe try shifting your focus toward a highly specific niche rather than general digital marketing. Clients are looking for specialists who can solve a very specific problem right now Keep pushing and don't give up

The market is definitely more competitive than it was a few years ago, but businesses still pay well for specialists. Instead of adding more general skills, focus on becoming known for solving one specific problem, such as AI automation, CRM/email marketing (Klaviyo or HubSpot), or conversion optimization. Build a few strong case studies, narrow your niche, and rely less on crowded freelance platforms by networking on LinkedIn and reaching out to potential clients directly. That’s where many freelancers are finding consistent work today.

I landed in healthcare as an outreach coordinator. I am doing it part time for only 5 hours a week so I think i will focus in this niche. Thanks

the health care industry is vry interesting nd knowledge about it make a true competitive advantage. knowledge of how the market worksand what need and problem of the customer are would allow you to be a truly helpful marketer.

One thing I've noticed is that freelancers who teach or coach tend to stand out. Sharing what you know builds credibility, and clients are more likely to hire someone they already see as an expert.

Niche down and specialize in something in order to command premium prices and get customers.

Yes. Defintely the way to go. Freelance teaching is probably one of the more actual dependable jobs. People like independence. And thats what freelancing is., just i wouldnt depend on one client alone....But most know that already...

I'm a freelancer too. I believe the key to surviving is doing my best work by making the most of my strongest skills and always providing excellent service to my clients.

freelancer might look for new skill all the time, but the key factor could be the positioning. by deciding on the industry niche -say, healthcare nd understanding the challenge faced by the industry-you become more employable than other marketers.

Since you got that healthcare foot in the door, use it to learn their actual day-to-day problems. Most local clinics... dentists, physios, whatever... have totally dead email lists and zero automation. You could easily scrape local listings in your area and pitch them a quick database reactivation campaign. Offer to do it on a revenue share or pay-per-show basis to get your first few case studies. Bypasses the job board spam entirely and actually pays way better.

The market is definitely more competitive now, so standing out matters more than having a long list of skills I'd focus on one niche build a few strong case studies with measurable results and spend more time networking and getting referrals instead of relying only on job platforms

Specialized freelancers usually have an easier time landing quality clients than generalists

The skills clearly aren't your problem, the positioning is. From what I've seen freelancers competing on generic "digital marketing" always get buried because they blend into the 100s of applicants, so the fix is niching down hard, one service for one type of client, so you're the obvious pick instead of one of many. Also relying on job boards is a losing game since that's where everyone fights on price, the people staying booked usually build inbound through content or reach out directly to businesses that clearly need the work. I'd pick one specific offer, show proof you can deliver it, and stop applying to the same posts as everyone else.

With automation and email marketing skills, your best bet now is avoiding crowded platforms. Try reaching out to businesses directly on LinkedIn or via cold email, and show them actual workflows you've built. Selling results rather than just skills makes a huge difference today
