Found this a pretty interesting read -

Github recently hit by a 1.3tbps distributed denial of service attack. Apparently that’s a new record.

It was done by compromising memcached systems which were then instructed to flood github with UDP packets. The attackers employed some clever trick that amplified the data sent by up to 51,000 times meaning that for every bite of data sent by the attackers, github received up to 51kb to deal with and process.

Ahh, so that's why Github was down when I tried accessing it recently. I thought it was odd for such a popular site to be offline.
