Gimp vs Photoshop

Gimp is the best alternative to Photoshop. If you know Photoshop, it's pretty much the same as Gimp. Only Gimp is free and Photoshop costs big. You can create great graphics too with Gimp and like Photoshop, it has layers. I choose free vs. paid. :) Oh, and Gimp's interface is almost the same as Photoshop's. If not, I know they have a version that has the same UI as Photoshop.

In my opinion Photoshop is way better. More features, nicer handling and better performance. But in my opinion the most important fact for choosing Photoshop is the neatless integration in other Adobe products like After Effects or Flash.
 
Gimp is better for beginnners since the learning curve isnt as steep as photoshop. But if you can learn PS then by all means use that
 
My choice is Photoshop,it has no alternatives ,but Photoshop is the alternatives of gimp.
Photoshop spreads its wings to web design and become a king of designing.
 
To be perfectly honest: make the switch to Photoshop.

There really isn't too much you need to learn which a few projects following online tutorials won't teach you - other than the tools and techniques I only recommend getting a feeling for making proper use of the settings, pixels per inch etc.

I really prefer photoshop over gimp.

While Gimp can do a lot, it will make you lag behind in terms of designs in the end
 
photoshop won't limit your abilities to learn. learning gimp isn't really a skill, you can't put it on a resume
 
I'm a graphic designer myself and I fully recommend using photoshop, a mix of photoshop and illustrator shoud be all you need to create ant design you need, with photoshop there's a learning curve, do a few basic youtube tutorials on how to use layers and selecting.
 
I've been a graphic designer for 10 years and i'd say go with adobe all the way there is so many tutorial online now that we didn't had back in the days... but you'll have to invest a LOT of time in it...photoshop possibilities are unlimited
 
Photoshop is the best gfx program around, hands down.
 
Photoshop works better than gimp in image manipulation as long as it handles 16 bit color depth instead of 8bit color depth used by gimp. If you don't adjust leves or curves both makes the same job.
 
Photoshop is much, much better then Gimp, i'm using PS for 3 years and i see no problems, it's just amazing.
 
Use Gimp if it's for personal use, and making banners every so often. For most people this is fine. There's no need to get the industry standard software if you're just going to be doing simple editing anyway. Also it's free.

However in the business world, if you plan on doing collaborations, working to be a web designer, or to be a graphic designer, it's going to be in Photoshop most of the time.
 
I think Photoshop is by far (for me) the most useful software Adobe ever created. GIMP looks like a cheap copy... If you want a comparation, it is like the difference between iPhone and chinnese clones that look pretty much the same but they are actually so different...
 
Personally I think Photoshop is a lot better, but it has the price to match.
