Gimp vs Photoshop

I use Gimp, i tried making the transition to PS a while back and its was difficult since all i know is Gimp. Gimp can do most things photoshop can do so i suggest you stay.
And for those saying Gimp isnt compatible with PSD you can easily make a gimp file a psd file by renaming it.

GIMP is modeled after Photoshop, so using both is easy.
Photoshop is the Gold Standard for pro graphics.

Used both Gimp & Photoshop.
Where I am using PS for last 5 years, I got used to with the tool & can do pretty much everything I can.
But when I switched to Ubuntu & had Gimp as alternative, I was like kinda lost (I know because my mind knows I am more comfortable with PS). Gimp is a good tool to use, but my preference goes with Photoshop when I am about to choose only one.

Photoshop is hands down the best photo editing and manipulation software on the market. GIMP does a good job of not sucking, but it still doesn't really come close. Search "thethingy" torrents for anything adobe you wish, dude's been wrecking their software for years.
BTW, I see a lot of illustrator recommendations. It is definitely one of the best softwares for creating designs and vector artwork... but I'd recommend CorelDraw over it. Especially with a few of the right tutorials, bezier tool with viewable nodes... CorelDraw easily compares with Illustrator and is more effective/easier to learn for many tasks. Illustrator still has some things it does better than CorelDraw, don't get me wrong. But it's way overrated, mainly just because 95% of graphic design courses push Illustrator.

If you're seriously getting into graphics, expand your knowledge in as many programs as possible. I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my designs, in my opinion it's like photoshop on steroids. I also use Gimp, and photochop cs6
I had some friends who swore by gimp, mainly cause they were too scared to pirate photoshop. It really held them back in their designs. There are so many resources and pay for image / already layered smart objects for photoshop. Why reinvent the wheel. You can augment your designs with the free layered PSD's already out there and easily share your PSD files with other artists.

It actually depends how the designer is thinking to make that design. So it is always personal choice.
