Gimp vs Photoshop

I use Paint.NET for almost everything, but only because I have enough Add-Ons to make it comparable to PS. One such Add-On allows me to edit .psd files.

I know how to use both, but PhotoShop always seemed less intuitive between the two, so I avoid it when I can.

Both are more versatile than GIMP, though.

that is true. all the designers i work with do mockups in fireworks not photoshop

Nice, great discussion going here and glad I asked it.

Might be upgrading my cracked version of photoshop to a legit one.

I always used GIMP in my personal life. It was helpful and I did learn some basics about image manipulation.

Not too long ago I started using Photoshop for my work life. Photoshop is a far more powerful too... it is really hard for me to compare the two now.

GIMP will get you by but I think overall you will get better results from Photoshop. You will have better pictures and the knowledge of using it will take you farther professionally.

I do all my design in Photoshop because I find it way easier to use than Illustrator -- never tried fireworks.

I've used both. Photoshop is superior but you pay big $$$ for its better user interface, features, extensions, and reliability. I edit large multi-layer images in Photoshop that Gimp can't handle. If you can figure out the UI and don't need all of the Photoshop features, then Gimp is fine. And the price is right.

They are both simply tools. You are what in the end creates the graphics.

I have seen images done with GIMP that are far beyond what my capabilities will ever be. Photoshop is the industry standard but once you know the basics in one transitioning to the other cannot be too difficult IMO. Gets down to a matter of preference.

Funnely enough I prefer the user interface of GIMP over photoshop but perhaps that's just because I've got a cracked version and it just doesn't feel right. I might try the real one to just compare it.

I have Photoshop 6 - GIMP, Paint.Net w/ plugins and MS Paint.
Believe it or not I use them all for various things....

I use photoshop at home and Gimp at work. Prefer photoshop because I'm so used to the hotkeys etc. Weird but its why I like photoshop

Photoshop is linga franca of graphic design, but you can do a lot in Gimp, it usually just takes longer and doesn't come with all bell and whistles.

Photoshop for me , Gimp is like an imitation.

Photoshop over gimp any day. Irfanview is better than gimp, however - that's just my opinion on graphic editing.

yes! for my purposes, infranview is much easier than automating gimp. Batch resize, scale, etc.

GIMP - Free and easy to use

Adobe Photoshop - Raster Graphics(Pixel degradation when scaled), works with pretty much everything, amazing software (maybe the best ever created).

Adobe Illustrator - Vector Graphics(Infinite Scale without loosing quality and crispness) Better for print designs and billboards, logos such stuff.

You get what you pay for... We tried to use Gimp and after years of PS... I hated Gimp...
