Gimp vs Photoshop

I've been playing around with making graphics for quite a while (they're pretty bad still).

Is it bad for me to stick with using Gimp (which is my preferred software) or should I try and make the transition to photoshop if I want to get serious?

It's probably not a bad idea to know both. Gimp is sweet and you can do pretty much everything you need in it. But if your working with other people your going to work on Photoshop projects and I hear that Gimp doesn't handle PSD files all that well.
 
I've been using GIMP only for years..never needed to learn PS. However, if I was to have to learn it at this point it would be a nightmare.
 
Don't waste your time on Gimp, Photoshop is where it's at and no boundaries. I knew of people that wasted too much time on paint shop pro back in the day, never took the time to pick up Photoshop. And their graphic skill lagged. If you want to get serious Photoshop.
 
I agree with turtle love (there's a sentence I never thought I'd say). I've been using photoshop for years and recently turned to gimp as I was looking to try and get my head around linux. Photoshop is just another level above gimp. Yes, it's free and for freeware it's fantastic, but if you're looking to use it for professional reasons then imho photoshop is the only way.
 
you can't compare photoshop to gimp. it's like comparing a ferrari to a pinto.
 
photoshop is not that hard, and a lot of free tutorials are available all over the web

as you already know gimp, transition will not be as hard as you may guess.
 
both have pros and cons. Of course as an expensive software photoshop has a lot more features and fancy stuff which will be more appealing to most people. But gim has other advantages. To my mind the biggest advantage is the bash mode. Which brings me to my point-I know for a fact that the thing running behind photofunia for example are some really complicated bash gimp commands. And thanks to that if you have to apply a single/multiple actions to a large number of files-gimp will be tons faster than photoshop. A comparison would be

Also as a die hard linux fan I would always go for gimp
 
I use Photoshop and Xara Designer. Photoshop does Raster graphics
and Xara Designer does Vector graphics (similar to Adobe illustrator).
I find it easier to draw graphics in Vector programs. A good free Vector
app is Inkscape for those that want to start working with vector and
can't afford to pay for Illustrator or Xara Designer.

Gimp does have its advantages, but if you think you're going to get a job as a designer using Gimp. Think again.
 
Invest in your future if you are interested in turning this into a career you will eventualy need to work in PSD, which GIMP doesn't handle seamlessly.
 
Photoshop is probably a more wiser choice if you were to pick one.
 
After Windows 8 is released people will switch to Linux based ( which does not support photoshop ) but businesses will stay and/or switch to windows 8 because of tablet support and office applications. So learn both

That'll never happen. If they switch, they'll switch to a mac, not linux for desktop.

Finally someone talks about vectors!! All that blablabla about photoshop. Photoshop is for image manipulation and NOT a software to draw graphics.
For example: first letter A is made in illustrator and the second in Photoshop, but why the difference?? Because photoshop generates bitmap images and illustrator vectors!!

If you REALLY want to go professional you will have to learn to draw in vector!! When will people understand this ...
