Getting your blog featured?

I've come across some blogs that have been featured on big websites like Forbes, Time Magazine etc.

How do they get featured? - do those sites just happen to stumble across those blogs and add them to the site maybe under an article like "best self help blogs" or do the blog owners contact those big sites and try and get featured.

Money talks. Either guest posts as Dennyfar said, or some kind of advertising where you pay a monthly fee to stay on there.

I was mind-blown by this.

Is this true? Then, can anyone please recommend websites that you can guest post by how you're worth but not how much you're worth?
