Getting started with $2k -What method is best?

I'm a freelance graphic designer, and I've started looking into doing some internet marketing to fill some of my down time, and start creating more income for when design work is slow. I figure this could be a good way to continue turning my skills into $$$.

I've been looking at various methods on the board, and it seems most are geared towards people that have little or no money to start up. I'm wondering if there are certain things that would produce income quicker/easier, but require some sort of outlay in the beginning stages. I put the $2k budget in there as an idea to work off of.

Those of you that are experienced in taking action and making money, what would you do with a $2k budget?

I would use the money to buy some microniche sites that you can get here as well as SEO.

This was my original idea, to buy a few sites that are already a bit established and improve on them from there. My main concern with this plan, is being able to add value to the site in the short term. Even if I get a great deal on a website (say around 5-6x monthly income), I'm still at least 6mo out from turning a profit. As far as business goes, that is still a good investment, but I'm wondering how much time it takes to make a noticeable revenue gain from SEO. In general the SEO process is a slow-burn, but if I had a way to double the monthly revenue of a site in around 3 months, this method would work quite well. I'm just not sure if re-design and investing in some SEO services (plus doing what I can myself) would be enough to make a noticeable gain in the short term.
 
even i am looking to invest the money i earned from e-whoring...around 2k!

yea. i would do something LEGITIMATE

i dont suggest that you do some stupid black hat method for CPA or some junk like that because that will get you nowhere. i mean, it might make you some decent money for a short period of time but thats about it. i suggest that you pick a niche that you actually enjoy, something that you are very knowledgeable about and start a web site. build a following with twitter facebook and youtube. also, build an opt in email list. capture their first names, home phones, and cell phones as well because mobile marketing is going to be VERY important soon. and of course you can blast their home phones with PBC or some other similar service. but i suggest that you start selling your own products or services, its the most profitable thing that you can do, cut out all middle men. or at least sell your own ad space on your web site. because 2K is a good amount of money to invest into SEO (black hat seo is fine) and other social media services. provide real value to people and then the universe will reward you with the $$$ :)

if you dont provide real value, you will not get far at all, trust me. now its up to you to be creative and come up with a marketing plan

Thanks for the well thought out response. I definitely see your point in going after something that works long-term. I thought about researching some niche's that I have some interest in, and then creating a website around that, but from a monetary standpoint it seems like quite a long process to gain that initial traction.
What are your thoughts on buying a website that already has a bit of traffic/revenue and using some blackhat seo methods, along with aesthetic changes to increase revenue? This seems (in my head anyway) fairly legitimate, and something that could work long term. Maybe a site that makes money off of adwords or amazon?

yea man, that could definitely work. where do you plan on buying this web site from? if its from flippa, be VERY careful because there are many schemers and scammers on there. and yes, if you take this route it might take quite some time to start making decent money but its the best thing you can possibly do. you dont build a building from the middle up, you build it from the ground up, you have to start somewhere. lay your foundation and then keep building on top of it, scale up to the max. amazon pays small money so i dont suggest them being your main way to make money. adsense is ok if you target high competition keywords but if i were you i would find clients to sell your own ad space to, much more profitable and you can make you own prices, not to mention you will be in much more control of your business instead of google controlling your business :)

maybe an adsense or amazon review site. You can probably make 3 really good adsense sites which can make you 40-50 bucks per day...if not more
 
Put all of your money into silver stocks and sell it in a year, your 2k will be 3 to 4k. Thats what I did.

In your case I would buy an ugly ranking site, and use your graphic design skills to make it beautiful, thus increasing the time the visitor spends on your site, as well as your conversion ratio. During this time you can work on SEO for this site, to see what works and what doesn't :)
 
A very hard question I would say.(obviously)

Here is what I basically did:

Buy automated tools to do your SEO (that would bring in the need to learn SEO though and the tool(s) as you can't usually hop in a tool and expect to understand it)

Go big and buy better hosting along with multiple domains.(20-30?) Of course this would presuppose that you already know SEO and can find good keywords to rank on.

As you are a graphic designer website designs should make your sites attractive and perhaps convince more people to buy stuff.

Also notice as SEO is such a wide term most people including me advise based on their own experiences in pretty narrow outlooks. Ultimately I doubt you will get a good answer and most SEO is pretty hit and miss. You usually don't find a really settling niche you can stop on as the thread of being outdone is always looming.

So in one sentence I advise to go big/medium and try to dilute your risks going for just one way or niche.
