getting spammed with orders from bots (some that go through)....why would anyone do this?

I run a woocommerce site that offers some services, some bot just keeps placing mass orders using different credit cards - about 10% of the sales go through, the other 90% are rejected by our payment processor.

Anyone know why the botter would do this? There's no obvious benefit for them.

Is it illegal to keep the money?

Can I ask what kind of services you offer?
The first thing that comes to mind is that if they are going through a list of stolen cards a bot might be useful.

If 90% of the transactions are getting rejected it looks extremely fishy.
I asked about what you were selling because if your product is something that has a lot of demand that could be a reason too.

And yes they may be going through a list of stolen cards for it.

Absolutely they are. Do you have low security on your website? Even if you do not...that is one hundred percent what they are doing. Im guessing you have an item on your website that is super, super cheap? Or prove you are not a bot is not being used? etc etc

The nice thing about this is you are not doing anything illegal. Keep that money and hope it keeps coming in!

It's not from Bots, your website has been shared on Carding Forums and some ICQ Groups claiming that your website is cardable, so they are doing some orders hoping that you will ship items for them.

I advice you to do a Manual Verification on All Orders and start requesting Verification for each order made, By simply asking for ID Card + Credit Card Used ( Hide all numbers except last 4 ).

They turned your site into credit card checker, they mass check generated credit cards from bins into your site to see if they are valid

This is exactly what they're doing. Refund these transactions as fast as you can to avoid chargebacks. Keeping any of the money now will only hurt your merchant account and company reputation.

How much is the ammount? if it's small then they probably make bot to test out carding on your site.
be careful though, keeping it can give your trouble in the future.
this happened many time when illegal money is sent to someone, than the one receive it use it, and got caught for it.
