Its important that are not guestbooks with tons of links. The number of links per page (and hopefulyy, not much spammed pages) count.
Not ALL guestbooks are good, but GOOD guestbooks are very important to rank well.

My experience with guest blogs.
I've a technical blog, so i usualyl receive guest blogs from anything from apps to game or hardware.

I usually take just the one that are related to my blog and as rule I allow just 2 links in the article, this over time has helped both me and the guest bloggers.
