We are all here to make money. We have learned from Google that search is everything. Knowing what people are looking for is a treasure that should be taken care of. Some friends here are so much concentrated upon the number of visitors that they cannot see the big picture or other precious opportunities. OK, let's dive deep into subject:
1) When you create a site, you expect to make money from it. That is mostly done by attracting visitors.
2) Those visitors "visit" your site by entering some keywords (search terms) into the search box of search engines.
3) Those search terms are much more valuable than the number of visitors.
Yes you all know these basics. You can grab main keywords bringing traffic to any site using goodies like semrush or GKWT. But that is only the small part of the treasure. If you think this is all, then you are missing 90% of the story.
Search terms that people use to visit your site hold very valuable information which cannot be gathered easily. Using a decent statistics plugin, you can know
- where those visitors are coming from (incredibly important - local seo?)
- what search engines they use
- what keywords they are looking for
- what pages/posts are visited mostly
Lots of plugins will give these information for free to us (GA and clicky are the best and jetpack works too). But unfortunately, as far as I see from the threads, many friends fail to check detailed stats of their sites. Sometimes a 2 minute look at those words and numbers may bring money to your feet (if you are willing to see it).
I hope you are not angry to read this thread. Up to now, all those things are well known by you. Now comes my method:
I check (analyze) stats of my sites very carefully. I do not care if that site has got many visitors that day. That is surely good news but finding a gem is much better than that. I do not look for numbers, I look for the little, forgotten, hidden words people use to come to my sites.
When I analyze the stats, almost once in a month (or week if I am lucky) I see a search term (a word, two words or several words connected together) that I have never seen. Then the light comes out. It is generally a new product/phenomenon that has never been searched before.
BINGO!!!! At that time I see that I have found a keyword even Google cannot bring suggestions (search suggestions or instant search options). If my site is one about diet pills or weight loss, that search term may be a new diet pill supplement or a new diet pill or a new weight loss method. Then I simply go to my registrar and buy sometimes 10 (YES TEN) variations of that keyword.
After that, I order several articles to my writers, schedule and post them on the new site(s). Finally I watch people visiting them which are the only sources about that subject (or they may be several of those rare sites). Can you imagine the CTR in such a situation? Around 10%. And they are so much inclined to buy your affiliate product or to click on your ads. Moreover, the very funny thing is that, those new comers bring more fresh keywords to me while surfing sites.
Bottom line is, analyze carefully the search terms that your visitors are using to reach your site. One of them may bring opportunities that you cannot dream of.
You may call me crazy but I even build sites (mainly autoblogs) just for the sake of grabbing those kind of fresh keywords.
